Oh yeah, with our godly defense that's physical and dominant. Yeah we're going to smash them the NEXT time we play them, can't wait.

As long as Ryan Day is head coach, they're most likely not beating teams with similar talent. Just look at the numbers.

Time to move on to a new coach.

HS
BodyBuilderBandDaddy's picture

I'd say the verdict isn't out on that yet. He's under trial for sure. But I'd throw out the following
Bama in the covid bowl. Where we sat so many of
our players (starters) due to testing positive for covid while the SEC was less restrictive than the B10 (I don't blame them). And we lost Sermon on his first carry of the ball game.
Tcun and Stallions. If if a OSU fan actually doesn't take those 3 losses in account for what they are. Put on a shirt that says GO BL _ _ and curse your own name. Because you're not a fan.
I'll give us Clemson in 2020 loss. Those fgs cost us majorly.
And the home Oregon loss with the debacle at Def coordinator that year. Paaaainful.
And the GA loss with all the big plays. Similar to what we just saw vs Oregon. Costly
I'll fall on the sword months from now. But I ABSOLUTELY believe in this team feeding and fueling off this loss. I repeat - Many of Sabans championship teams took that tough loss and then played to their real potential. So did Urbans. I'M ALL IN

Never took em
And to answer the above
You'll find me criticizing the D throughout the live game comments. Knowles fails in the big games.
However we lost by 1. At Oregon. Onside kick in their favor. TOs in their favor. Waaaaaay more calls/penalties in their favor. Many of the calls were legit. But still the amount of calls were one sided. Jeremiah Smiths push off wasn't worthy of a call. They were both engaging in contact. I don't see Burke having that bad of game in a rematch whatsoever. They ran a lot of shenanigans. We've seen them.
Shout out to Michalski stepping it up and not being a liability.
So yeah
We'll stomp em out in a rematch
Thats my belief. But I'm an actual fan.
1 point loss? Why yes. I still believe.

HS
GVerrilli92's picture

“Still believing” and “We’ll stomp em out in a rematch” are two vastly different ideas.

I still believe we can win a national championship, but the whole “generational defense” talk can go right out the window. The whole “disciplined, veteran team” can go right out with it.

Losing this game was always going to suck, but the turnovers, the penalties, the clock management, not pulling Denzel when he was clearly reeling, are in combination absolutely unacceptable when evaluating Ryan Days performance tonight. We can have the best roster in the world, and we still might. However our head coach is simply not giving them a chance to win. Sad for the players really.

Kitties aren't supposed to smell like cigarettes, they're supposed to smell like kitties.

HS

A real championship coach would have pulled Burke out of that game. If Knowles refused to do it - Day should have done his job and stepped in to make that call. Targeting Burke was obviously the Oregon game plan and after he got smoked 2 or 3 times they should have pulled him in favor of Mathews Jr.

Urban Meyer >Jim Harbaugh for ever and ever, Amen. 0

HS
LonelyKicker2001's picture

I was at the game. Here are a few observations.

1) We absolutely can and should have beat them, but it’ll likely never be a blowout this year.
2) Denzel Burke played like absolute dog shit and I love that kid. He was allowing the catches and then giving 5-10 extra yards trying to strip the ball instead of just tackling the bastard.
3) it was sooo fucking loud. Never been to a game that loud. That they were even getting snaps off is a feather in their cap.
4) This will likely be our new rivalry for years to come..

5).On a non-game note, these fans were some of the best sports I’ve ever been around. I had people rolling down their windows at me to say we have a hell of a team and we’ll see you again in a couple months. I don’t know if I would be that humble.

Conservative play calling and decidedly one sided and horrendous officiating cost us this one. We should have easily smacked them down and Day played right into their hands with overthinking.
Also, if illegal formation happened prior to the play, why was the clock not reset to 10 seconds?

Brilliant new defensive strategy that is apparently quite legal! If a team is winning with time running out in the 4th quarter, they can "accidentally" have 12 or more players on the field, stop the offense from getting into field goal range, and give them a 5 yard penalty while burning critical time off the clock. This could theoretically be done multiple times, with only a 5 yard penalty each time and ~5 seconds coming off the clock each time! Yay football rules!

Mental mistakes, penalties, turnovers, time management.

This is what I'm most disappointed about. Oregon is really good. No shame in giving up big plays to a talented team. But the numerous mental mistakes really says volumes. Just not ready for prime time. So tired of all the excuses from Day. Can't believe I fell for all the hype AGAIN. Until we start winning more physical match-ups at the LOS, this will be the result. What a bummer.. Thought we had it fixed. Nope. OSU is now the bitch in physical matchups. Just sickening that we aren't at least the more physical disciplined team.

HS
Noblrabt12's picture

Will Howard played really well. That last play sucked but that was a really tough spot.

Only one way to find out

HS
GVerrilli92's picture

He did not play well.

The narrative surrounding Howard was that he would come in and be an ice cold game manager that gave the offense the highest floor, and the most consistent chance to execute. He was never going to be CJ Stroud, and that was ok.

However, if you’re going to lack the physical tools to throw a ball over 40 yards, you need to have some intangibles that stand out - to be the QB at OSU. JTs toughness, Craig Krenzel’s clutch factor, etc.

We had a 3rd down, on schedule, in the 4th quarter with a chance to march down and “leave no doubt.” Conversely, not converting meant giving Oregon the ball with great field position. Our veteran, savvy, confident, big-game quarterback dropped the damn snap and lost us 12 yards.

I’m sorry, but that’s all I needed to see. When a player has a good mental makeup, he doesn’t drop the ball on one of three most meaningful snaps of the game. I know, he distributed the ball well and made the throws he is supposed to make for most of the game. He didn’t make any massive mistakes, and that’s fantastic.

He didn’t make any big plays on his own, he didn’t put the team on his back, he didn’t take over game in anyway (certainly not like Gabriel did), and I’m here to say - THAT’S ALL OK. But if you’re going to play quarterback at OSU, and you’re not able to do any of those things - YOU CANT DROP A SNAP IN THE 4TH QUARTER OF A CLOSE GAME.

He took the ball out of his teammate’s hands, a team that he is by far the least athletic skill player on. We’re delaying Sayin’s development to avoid the growing pains, and we just got growing pains from the lower ceiling “safe” option. If we’re going to have a QB that makes mental errors every game, at least put in the one with the higher ceiling and more time to develop.

I’m totally ok with the Howard era being over. No hard feelings, seems like a great kid, and I’m sure he doesn’t care what I think.

HS
tcm1968's picture

I don't know. LJ still has carte blanche of the defensive line and he does NOTHING creative to create pressure. It's always hat on hat. And it's more than just Knowles who is responsible for our lack of quality linebackers.

Oregon is just able to throw enough pass catchers at us that you can't hide anyone...

I thought we were much better in the 2nd half after some adjustments.. but again, you can't hide Styles or Hancock against a team like that, and they took advantage...

Most disappointing thing to me was how they man-handled our DBs at the line, just blocked them out of every play.. we've had such physical corners for so long its just weird to see these dudes get pushed around so much..

Last point.. it's not coaching.. I have NO CLUE what the disconnect seems to be with these guys who 6 games in just refuse to do their jobs..  all season long we see people slip out of the backfield and lick clockwork no one picks them up.... I dont get it.. they aren't teaching that..

This seems to always be how it is. Everyone puckers up like a lemon head in big games and makes HUGE mistakes. We can’t let them dive in and take the football from our RB in our territory. That was literally the difference. Also the insides kick. Our special teams continues to be less than special. I had a bad feeling once that 15 yards was applied to the kickoff that something was going to go awry and it did. Just gotta play loose in big games and not make so many damn mistakes. On a neutral field, OSU woulda smacked that ass.

HS
BrutusB's picture

I’m super disappointed we lost but I’ll stick up for the two things you just mentioned:

1) The Q fumble was just kinda weird. He was in the backfield so fast I agree with the broadcasters that he didn’t even expect him and took the ball on a great play.  Hat tip to the defender

2) The “onsides kick” was the weirdest, flukiest play I’ve seen in like 30+ years watching football. My guy got a football unexpecteddtly kicked a football kicked full speed into his chest from 10 yards away and you’re mad he didn’t catch it immediately and fall over?  That kinda weird shit just happens sometimes, its not anyone’s fault.

HS
tcm1968's picture

They were kicking from midfield after the face mask. If you look at the all 22 we only had 2 dudes in the middle of the field, and everyone but the guy who got hit by the ball was bailing at the start.

He was calling long developing pass routes with little time and a makeshift offensive line, when we were already in makable FG range.. and we still had a time out..

tcm1968's picture

Where did I say the offense sucks.. I said the final two drives I grade him an F.

15 straight pass plays to end the game and final two drives we scored 3 points..

He seemed oblivious to the fact out WRs were sucking wind, kept pushing towards the end zone in one point game. Got straight up lost and didn't realize that after the OPI the clock started and just let the clock bleed forever with a slow play call..

He abandoned EVERYTHING that got him to that point to win the game with a FG, no running plays, no pass plays to Gee Scott ( who they couldn't guard the whole night)..

As good as he was for most of the game, he was just as bad at the end.

Go Bucks!!!

Most reasonable take. Made enough plays to win but the defense, especially the secondary, was awful in coverage and even run support. I was shocked at how bad Burke and Ransom were. Simon played better in the 2nd half, but he was bad in the 1st half. Sawyer was nowhere to be found. I thought for sure Knowles would unload the playbook tonight, and I feel like it was still way too vanilla. Why the fuck are we paying this guy?? Almost no creativity on 3rd down even though the 3rd down numbers look decent.

Michalski came in and battled his ass off, but too many unforced errors by the O line overall despite the fact that they moved the ball well. Everyone will focus on the last play, but Howard/Day were most disappointing with letting so much time off the clock after the bullshit PI call (a call NEVER MADE). The Oregon D was reeling and were blitzing almost every down. Screen pass to either of our backs??? Howard played really well otherwise. Sucks his performance is likely going to be remembered for those last few plays.

HS

Agreed -- Oregon had 3 penalties for 25 yards, one of which was the guy spitting in Igbinosun's face and getting ejected and another that burned the clock with 10 seconds left in the game... There was a lot of home cooking in that mediocre 60k stadium that pumps in extra noise all game.

HS
jefferson970's picture

Serious. They were both using their hands, JJ was stronger.

Hmm

HS
Pahimar's picture

Pretty normal contact at the top of the route and the Oregon dB lost his balance. Technically a penalty, probably. Worthy of giving a 15 yard penalty that puts us out of game winning field goal range, probably not.

HS
tcm1968's picture

I didn't have a problem with it, in real time. Hand checking and then Smith wanted separation and is just a lot stronger than the DB and flattened him..

Bigger issue is why not just run the ball.. we were already in FG range and had a timeout with 28 seconds left. Why did Kelly keep trying to push it towards the goal line?

Go Bucks!!!

HS
I'm Ron Burgundy's picture

Because if we run the ball for no gain and miss a 45 yd FG, what do you think everyone would say then?

We were carving em up passing at the point, the decision to pass was not an issue. Just a really bad break with the OPI call, which instead of a 10 yd gain was a 15 yd loss. Massive massive swing, and based on the one brief replay we got, a very tricky tacky call in that situation. Game changing call.

HS
acBuckeye's picture

"Bigger issue is why not just run the ball.. we were already in FG range and had a timeout with 28 seconds left. Why did Kelly keep trying to push it towards the goal line?"

One of the big money decisions. Day and all of us have bad memories of kicking a FG down 1, but I was hoping to see a run there as well. However I think Oregon blitzed the A gap on that play, so probably wouldn't have worked, but I could be wrong. Day may have asked Chip to be aggressive. We were great until the ticky tack PI call.

If OPI isn't called, we had the ball at the 18, clock stopped for a first down and 27 seconds to play.  So clearly the strategy was at least to get in there.

Howard was just trying to make something happen on the last play. That 4 second penalty for too many men on the field was bs. Reminded me of watching the end of a damn Chiefs game tbh (but sadly in reverse).

The whole  played a role in this loss. Howard was just the last one to mess up. Not the end of the season, on to Corn.

HS
smithtoginn_1's picture

I dispute that it was entirely Howard's fault. Was anyone even trying to call a timeout? Day should've been standing by a ref calling time out before the play was over or any buckeye in the field. It would at least went to replay to see when Howard's knee actually touched or possibly an angle that shows his shin touching before the knee.

Job security should be based on meeting expectations and performance. Not “oh we MIGHT not be able to do better”. It really is the stupidest defense of Ryan Day.

There’s never going to be 100% certainty. So Day should just keep his job as long as he keeps piling up wins against mediocre teams, loses in big games against top teams, .500 vs TTUN (at best), underperforming recruiting classes, zero nattys?

This is THE Ohio State Buckeyes. Expectations are  sky high. I’m sure this is communicated to every coaching hire. If coaches aren’t going to be held accountable for meeting those expectations then the only thing left is to lower expectations. Might as well be Iowa then.

HS
mockjocks's picture

Apparently Ryan Day built the entire football program from scratch. Ohio State was nothing before his arrival. The entire world knew who he was before he got here, so it would be foolish to believe Ohio State could hire a great coach who wasn't a household name and be as successful or better. OSU could never.

Apparently Ohio State Football is identical to Nebraska Football, without the coach firings.

HS
flohiostate's picture

Explain that one to me a little more please. Point #1 that byes don't matter and they play the same amount of games. Let's throw a hypothetical in there - Oregon and OSU meet in the Big 10 Champ game. OSU wins and gets a bye, Oregon loses and does not. They have to play a first round game and OSU doesn't. How do they play the same amount of games?

Anywhere you go in the world, you can always count on the O-H-I-O

HS
Dakotaz's picture

Correct. Biggest disadvantage are the teams that lose their conference championship game but make the playoffs.. but that just gets back to my first point that Saturday’s game doesn’t matter in the grand scheme.

Really all that matters is that you win your conference championship game and if you don’t make it altogether, it’s not the end of the world

Silver linings:
In a 12 team playoff this loss means very little
We lost by 1 to the #3 team
We had a chance at the end and shot ourselves in the foot.

That VT loss felt catastrophic. If there was ever a 'good' loss, this was it. But damn it hurts... That pass to Egbuka to put us in FG range I thought for sure that was game. Wow.

No one wants Day to succeed more than I do, but his record is what it is for a reason. We are always the ones making the critical error, the bad penalty, or being on the other side of the shocking special teams play. Day isn't the OC anymore so he has zero excuses. I just don't know that he's ever going to get us over the hump and it fucking sucks.

But the QB situation is weird for me right now. Howard is a great dude, great leader, hasn't done anything to warrant less time. But if the defense is going to continue to play like this in big games, I don't know how you can win with such a wet noodle arm at QB. If they actually show up, sure, great. But if we're going to be in shootouts against talented teams, this team is absolutely beyond fucked in a four-round playoff.

Howard was 28/35 for 326 yards 3 total TD. It ain’t on him. Shitty defensive game plan to not put any pressure on Gabriel. Ends couldn’t get any pressure and Burke was terrible.

Worst coaching decision was not to go for 2 at any point to try to get the lead to 7. If you miss and you get a FG and you’re only up 8 it’s a one score game, but it was not that kind of game.

If you were going to drop one this was it - away, top 3 matchup, still early, and you can still get a rematch in Indy. But it will feed the narrative that Day can’t win big games for another cycle.

Another Ryan day let down game.  I’m tired each year hearing we have the best defense this and that and then see this shit.  This team is loaded but poorly coached.  We won win a natty and we may drop to Penn state. Texas would go in us dry diddy style. D line sucked, Burke sucked. Linebackers non existent. Offensive PI? Wtf. That was game there but this team won’t win a natty under day.  Ryan Dayton is 2-7 against top 5 teams and one of those wins was with the team Urban Meyer left behind for him, so he’s 1-7 with kids he’s recruited

We literally just got cheated 3 times in the last 10 seconds of the game.  For one, that OPI was bullshit.  You are allowed to be a little physical on both sides of the ball.  That minimal contact never gets called any other time.

Then on the penalty where Oregon had too many players on the field, they still took the 4 seconds off the clock for the play, instead of putting it back at 10 seconds for a pre-snap defensive penalty.  What's to prevent a defense from just putting 50 defensive players on the field in that situation for every snap and slowly getting the time to wind down?

Then lastly, although Howard's play at the end seemed pretty boneheaded, on replay it actually shows he started (and even completed) his slide with 1 second left on the clock, and us with a timeout that I'm sure we were begging to call on the sidelines the entire time.  That puts us at a 39 yard FG attempt to win the game.  Just absurd officiating to decide the game.

HS
PBuckM07's picture

It’s not a pre snap penalty.  You could make an argument it should be, but it isn’t.  Not sure about the timeout, it’s never awarded the instant a knee is down and would depend on the whistle, my hunch is there’s not enough physical time in one second for his knee to hit the ground and whistle be blown.

These are not the reasons this game was lost anyways.

Three things at the end there. Number one that was a total bullshit offensive pass interference call. They were within the 5 yards and both hand fighting. That never gets called unless the ball is in the air and the receiver pushes off to catch the pass. Secondly, after the penalty, there was never a whistle blown to restart the clock. I watched it three or four times to try to hear. There is a referee signaling behind Will Howard by about 30 yards, but no whistle. They’re supposed to blow a long whistle and wave their arm. The reason everybody was standing around looking at each other and letting 12 seconds off the clock and nobody knew what was going on. And then, lastly, will Howard slides with one second left and we were signaling a time out. Time out should’ve been called with one second left on the clock. I’ve never seen a more bizarre game than this in my entire life. The officiating crew really really screwed this up. It will be the talk of the town all week.

Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.

HS
KrenzelKrazy's picture

I agree wholeheartedly. The DB tried to check Smith and got owned. And the timing at the end was bs. There was borderline 1 sec left when Howard went down, but the allowing 12 seconds to run off and then the additional 4 seconds that weren’t put back on was bs. Day also should’ve been more on the ball with that and just called a timeout once he noticed the runoff after the penalty. Shitty Chiefs-like ending all around.

So losing Simmons really sucked because we were running on them before that... some very weird things that happened in this game including the kickoff off the leg which gave them three points ,Gabriel played about as well as he can possibly play, most weird stuff went Oregon's way amd the past interference could have been called about 85 times in the game and they decided to do it then?! That said Ohio State shot themselves in the foot too many times and unfortunately our defense did not play up to the standard they should be playing up to with all this talent.. there should have been more blitzes and somehow their offensive line out played our guys on the defensive line which should never be a thing I don't even think I heard Sawyer's name mentioned... that said we just lost on the road to the number three team in the country and I honestly think these are the two best teams because Alabama definitely is not I would take either one of these two teams against Texas on a neutral field and Georgia just won it home 34 to 24 against a very very mediocre Mississippi State team and that's not the first time Georgia has squeaked by against mediocre competition so the world's not falling and this game is irritating and there's a lot of douchebags on Oregon so hopefully Simmons is back and this is a learning lesson especially for the defense and we get that rematch on a neutral field with these punks... a Big Ten Championship and a playoff and National Championship are still all there for the taking and this team can do it but need to shore some stuff up but for all you people that think the sky is absolutely falling amd the season is over you are wrong... I'm as frustrated as everybody else but a one point loss against what I really think is a top two team with pretty much everything going their way isn't the end of the world even if it sucks right now .go Buckeyes.

I will add to your comment.  Kudo's to you for calling out the Josh Simmons injury.  It was important because in big time college football there is no such thing as a dominant defense unless you really do have a defense of the ages.  Else, expect a 45 to 42 game, even if your defense on paper is #1.  There are two ways to mitigate this.  One is shorten the game with a punishing run game.  That is called keep-away.  You win by limiting the game to nine possessions each.  The loss of Josh Simmons ended that.  The second is an organic pash rush that wins with four.  Neither team had that which is why there were passing fireworks.  Everyone predicted this an L in August.  So, nothing changed.

When this team wins the natty, I better not see any of you naysayers toting championship garb. I bet you were the same ones talking shit in 2014 after the Virginia Tech game. This was a hard fought game on the road against a top team. Bucks will use this as motivation and will play the rest of the year with nothing to lose. I, for one, can't wait for the rest of the season.

HS

Lol the vtech game in 2014 was way different then this game. We are a insanely veteran team and so far we still make stupid mistakes that cost us games. Oline constantly false starting on the final 2 drives. Will howard fumbling the snap after the goal line stand on 3rd down. Not running it in field goal range with a timeout left and throwing it like why?

HS
Buckeye Chuck's picture

JT Barrett and Billy Price were freshmen taken to school against VaTech. They got better as the year went on, thankfully. This is almost certainly the most veteran team we've ever had.

Sure, maybe everything is sunshine and cotton candy from here. But why should anyone believe in them?

It's gonna get ugly for Day if they lose to the Nits, in a way we haven't seen here since 2000.

Bro, I watched that VT loss live from the A section. For context to those that don’t remember, we loss to an UNRANKED Va Tech team at home. Today was a 1 point (kinda bs game if you ask me, especially the wonkiness of the ending) on the road against the #3 team.

After the VT loss, I told everyone at our tailgate we could still make the playoff because it’s 4 teams if we win out and others lose (and we were ultimately the 2014 UNDISPUTED CHAMPS).

As long as we take care of business the rest of the season, we’re a definite playoff team. Even with 1 more not so bad loss (like @ PSU or B1GCG), we’re in CFP 12 team playoff. Hell, we could lose 3 games and still make the CFP and win the title. We need to clean some shit up on D and get in the run the table mode. OH!!!

Can’t fumble ball 3 times with one they kept plus an onside kick which everyone knew they’d run after the penalty and then have 8 penalties when you go on road.

Howard played well but I thought he only looked at smith near the end.

plus Kelly ran into an 8 man box a lot tonight and didn’t threaten them much long. Pretty weak ass playcalling.

I don't even know where to start...

Jim Knowles - why in the world did you not get more aggressive? You let the QB unpressured all game
Chip - what changed after the 1st drive? The offensive game plan sucked after that
Denzel Burke - what the FUCK was that? Aside from you getting toasted every play, whatever that 'tackling' technique was - stop it immediately
Will Howard - I'm not sure why you decided to start lobbing 30 yard passes on the last drive after several successful nice short pass completions and first downs. Why did you let all that time burn after the offensive interference. What the FUCK were you thinking on that last play? I'd expect that from a freshman, but not a 5 year starter.
Offensive line - seriously, I have no idea why you cannot grasp the whole snap count concept. Is 1st and 10 not challenging enough?
Special teams - the 'DUH' onside kick play was brutal... you literally have one job on the kickoff and that is watching out for the onside kick and then block.

Oh well... on to next week

I've seen nothing from Jim Knowles to warrant bringing him back another season, defense has been soft all year long and somehow looks worse than last year despite most starters returning. 1 loss on the road to a top 3 team doesn't kill the season in a 12 team playoff format, but it hurts to lose this one in an eerily similar fashion to the Georgia game. Unbelievably bad clock/game management once again, no idea what Howard was thinking trying to run at the end, that ball has to be thrown away for either a hail mary or 55 yard FG.

HS
Eph97's picture

Denzel Burke just played himself into the 3rd round. Holy coaching malpractice. He should've been pulled
and replaced with Jermaine Mathews after the 4th time he got roasted.

After this season either Knowles or LJ or both have to go. This defense is the same old shit the last 3 years that gets its ass handed to it against the good teams. Gabriel had ALL DAY to throw and I never heard Sawyer's name one time.

HS

HS

I would like to chalk this one up as our "VT loss" a la 2014 on the way to ze natty...

Those hating on Day and Howard are just frustrated, misguided and emotional.

Just checking the stats, our D didn't make the long trip out west... giving up nearly 500 total yards? The ducks didn't magically become a juggernaut this week, esp how they started the season. Our D front four gets absolutely no push on a quality opponent, and that is very concerning.

So, hopefully like 2014, the coaches and team have honest and serious conversations amongst themselves and decide if what happened tonight was even remotely acceptable... really hoping this loss ignites everyone going forward.. did all these vets comeback for mediocrity? One would assume not... this whole thing of unfinished business is a cute motivational poster and bumper sticker. Let this be a massive wake up call.

I doubt all the talking heads will write off the team like they did in 14 but hopefully there can be some de-hype to let an unstoppable force develop and take hold.

Go Bucks!

HS

This loss could've been bigger if Oregon didn't leave so many easy points on the field. Our defense was not elite. Our situational awareness was poor. DBs were getting torched all night. I've felt the defensive backs and LBs were struggling in coverage and booooooooooyyyyyyyyyy I was right. Denzel was buuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrnnnnnnttttttttt. He personally gave up over 200 yards.  And they never switched it up.

Weird game. Felt we were gonna win until that last sequence of OPI (not) 12 men on the field, etc. I thought we were gonna get a TD and then that weird 15 yard penatly. The time running off the clock. 4 second disappearing on Oregon's penalty.

Nevetheless, Oregon shouldn't have been in the game at that point. Defense is a massive letdown. Chip Kelly and Ryan Day wasted two drives trying to throw screens.  We have the best WRs in the nation and the best RBs in the nation and THAT's what we did? Dumb.

At least the D got a stop on Oregon’s last drive to force a FG.  But that drive went 75 freakin’ yards and ate up a lot of clock.

We might still win the whole damn thing.  But our defense better wake up.  Oregon isn’t the only contender with a good offense.

HS

Good game.  Against 95% of teams about 5 of our plays Oregon stopped for medium to long gains would have been TD’s.

I don’t think any other QB hits both of those deep balls in stride like that & either overthrows or gives Burnke a chance to catch up and make a play.

HS
TXBuckeye59's picture

I still don’t know how good this team is. We could win out or we could lose 2 more.
1. Offensive playcalling was good enough to win that game. Thought our O-Line played well especially with losing their best lineman for probably the year.
2. This team was incredibly undisciplined tonight. False starts, stupid PI calls, and Will Howard’s terrible clock management and the terrible fumbled snap. To me this might be a leadership issue.
3. This defense is not a top 5, top 10, or top 15 defense. Our DEs are incredibly mediocre. Absolutely no pass rush. JT playing really selfishly and undisciplined by chasing the RB instead of his responsibility which was the QB. Burke , Hancock, and Igbinosin aren’t first rounders. They will be attacked the rest of the year.

Blaming this on Howard seems completely bananas.  He played a great game, the last play notwithstanding.  It’s especially bananas considering the defense basically no showed the first half and we lost two starters on the o-line.  I get it that it ended the game, but he drove us right down there to be in a position to win.  Gues that’s a long way of saying this one is on the D.

Anyone else getting that Choklihoma vibe from Ryan Day?

That win against Clemson in 21 is wearing thinner than the 2014 National title run.

I love the leadership from QB 1. But a weak arm QB that can’t take the top off the defense doesn’t make it easy on our running backs.

I’m not overly angry about the loss because it shows this team that they still lack discipline and it was at Oregon. We have to have a more aggressive defense and Burke has to wake the fuck up next time we play them.

HS
DaiTheFlu's picture

That vibe has been a vibe for awhile. This game reinforced it. I understand there are legitimate reasons for all of those big game losses, but at some point, you have to man up and make the plays and get the stops to win the game. There's a reason Clemson, UGA, Oregon, Michigan* always "get the breaks" against Ohio State. They're better prepared and better coached in these games. 1-7 speaks for itself, regardless of how many people here want to DV those for calling it out.

We lost no excuses, Oregon left alot of points on the field. Must be a law not to rotate our CBs. I always thought Burke was an Eli Apple clone no one ever tested him consistently. We dont have that superstar defensive player to make a play when we need it on the field. We got the names but they need to back it up on the field. I'm surprised we didn't get flagged for more PI calls. Offense did enough. Howard is a game manager don't expect him to be the reason we win. Defense will be the reason we win or lose along with special teams.

25 yard change of field possession on a phantom call. Thats the game. We went from having the ball on the 19 with 30 seconds left to the 44 with 10 seconds left. Clock shouldn’t have been running. Add to that the complete botching of the quinshon fumble that led to 6 pts and the time traveling 15 yard facemask call that somehow made its way to the kickoff, allowing oregon to get an onside kick and get 3 more points. It cost us a national championship against Georgia. I’m guessing Caleb Downs is wondering why he’s in Columbus.
also, at the end of the game, we were already in field goal range. Run it a couple of times, get it to the middle of the field and kick a field goal. Day did the same thing, also against Georgia, and the kicker hooked the ball left. Idiots!!

May have been a great coaching move by lanning bringing an extra defender onto the field at 10 seconds knowing that the rules allow the play to proceed and time run off. While also knowing that the 5 yard penalty does not get us into field goal range.

Edge rushers are a joke. JT and sawyer combine for 5 total tackles? Where's Larry Johnson been the last few years?

Denzel Burke got smoked. I have no words, that was like watching his entire sophomore year. That was just hard to watch.

Ryan Day is overrated and this team was obviously built with money and it all comes down to hype. Caleb Downs is the real deal, the rest of the defense couldn't stop a slow nose bleed.

Our coach simply doesn’t understand how simple football is. Most people in this form don’t understand it. If you win the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, you win the game.

that’s why we lost all three Michigan games.

There’s a disconnect between the defensive coordinator and the defensive line coach.

I was there. Yes, #10 was taken to the woodshed. Yes, #18's lack of arm strength is real. Yes, tackling was, well, lacking. BUT...Otegon is damn good, their quarterback is a gamer, and their stadium energy shames The Shoe crowd twice its number...by so much that my hearing is totally shot. What a game!!! Our Bucks will be back.

Defense is ass. QB is average.

Day loses yet another big game. His staff was clearly out coached by Oregon. Very frustrating.

Lanning blew two games to Washington last year with everything on the line. Also has a worse winning percentage as a head coach than Day.

Other than that, you are spot on.

Every time Day's team experience even a hint of misfortune and/or a setback he get this deer in the headlights look on the sidelines and it trickles down to the team..

Now while I feel like shouldn't be coach of tOSU due to the aforementioned I know tOSU isn't going to necessarily fire him, but Knowles needs to be shown the door after this season which absurdly will end in his defense getting torched yet again in the first or second round of the playoff "20 million dollar's" my ass

Next loss; Penn State. Followed by a 4th straight to TTUN. Hell, maybe even falling to Indiana, and Nebraska. All's not lost though; seven wins will earn the Buckeyes a bowl.

Given the changes to the playoff system - this season gives the Buckeyes another chance.

There's plenty of responsibility in this loss to go around.

Let's see how they respond to this loss.

Coaches and players need to watch the game and be honest with themselves about their performances - either get better or next Buckeye up.

And, how bad are the injuries?

All is not lost.....

Simmons is out for the year. Given that he's an elite LT with no real backup, that's as devastating of a loss as we could have.

We can't stop here; this is bat country...

I was hopkng at the end, OSU would have been able to pull out the win, and still have tons to work on for the season going forward....Dammit Very dissappointing loss OSU is a very good team, but not elite that is for sure....

Will the Buckeyes even drop more than 2 spots in the rankings? They lost by 1 to a top 3 team in the final seconds. If Oregon is a top 3 team how is OSU not?

Per usual JT and Sawyer nowhere to be seen - trying to avoid injuries for the NFL ... so tired of hearing about JT - living life off of ONE game against Penn State (who cares)!!!  Need more guys from NEW HAMPSHIRE coaching this team!  Couldn't win with Stroud and Harrison and can't win with this lineup either!  A COMPLETE FAILURE!  Urban available???

This is by far the worst LB crew I've ever seen at OSU. They are the weak link. Tackling ? Burke & Styles looked like they were playing girls flag football. If Burke is going to be left on an island and eventually get roasted because no pressure, a coach might want to teach him to tackle. He will go undrafted after that showing. No Antoine Winfield. Did Sawyer have a single tackle. Talent in spades. Measurables in spades. Football players ? Coaching, terrible. Scheme on D, absolutely shite. We have no hitters and not a lot of football IQ on the field sans Downs He'll be in the portal after this year.

Don’t believe all the fake hype about this team. This team has a serious defense deficit disorder. Knowles has not made the Buckeyes a better defense. He’s made it a different defense with the same problems it has had for years. Can’t get off the field without giving up points and yardage. Knowles has shown some of the worst defensive schemes ever devised by a coordinator against dual threat quarterbacks. Buckeyes have to have the worst linebackers in college football regardless of division. You can shit in one hand and wish in the other but this team will not win a B1G Championship or a CFP Championship. Too weak on defense.

If you can’t make a fourth and one, you don't deserve to win.

What a game! I know some OSU “fans” will say some negative comments. But this is what it’s all about. A tough opponent, on the road; this team will grow from it and more importantly never forget the experience.
