Ransome missed one of the biggest plays when JT decided to chase the RB and let the QB go Ransome missed him right at the 1st down marker on a BAD Whiff. Downs looks pretty good in run support he for sure wasn't the best DB  against Oregon. The LB'rs have played pretty well all year, I would say the best defensive unit. I still think playing Sawyer and JT who are both SDE's together hurts the pass rush Caden Curry gets better pressure than both of them as does Jackson. Plain and simple Knowles got caught in Cover 1 and stayed in it too long. you cannot run the same defense every play when you are playing against a versatile fast offense. You have to slow them down by making them change their play at the LOS. CREATIVITY on defense.

You post a kinda true pic but in a lot of those games his defense was pretty decent like Missouri, the Defense was dominant. Knowles can't control the Offensive side of the ball.  Michigan 2023 was a very winnable game the QB made 2 huge mistakes. I agree the Defense needs to be better vs good opponents but under Day the Offense was not very good in some of those games as well!!

Knowles needed to change Defenses regularly vs Oregon using similar personnel so the Offense does not know what is coming. IMHO when his defenses look poor is when he gets predictable going clear back to Michigan 2022 and the Cover 0 debacle. He has good enough players that they can give different looks. Against Oregon when he went to some zone in the 2nd half the Defense was able to get stops and cause a FG attempt. He ran Cover 1 because Oregon had 3 WR's and sometimes 2 TE's . I think he has fallen in love with Caleb Downs and I question Downs cover skills while he is an unreal Safety in the run game he looks to me like he disappears hen man coverage is called. Downs is the best secondary player Knowles needs to call defenses where he is at his best.

So you are rushing 5? Hell you are blitzing!! you just described a blitz,  also genius that leaves a huge void some where on he field or puts a safety most likely in man coverage, defense is the true side of the ball that physics applies, to every reaction there is an equal or opposite reaction. Against teams with similar talent risking blitzing every play will get your ass burnt! Don't try to coach the defense when you have no idea what you are talking about. LORD!

To stop breakdowns you stop practice and correct any fundamental breakdowns Immediately because breakdowns are habit forming and contagious and your defense will become an undisciplined shit show! Why does he have to take the team on the field and talk about fundamentals these guys know their assignments they have been playing football for 15 years most of them.

I have coached Defense for almost half a century and JT blew his assignment, There was a safety 15 yards over the top! Who the hell had contain on that play if not JT? You are WRONG!!   

A 1 point loss to a good team who spent lots of money and had several incidents of home cooking (home Field Advantage) Happens. Move on

If you remember the bowl game last year the defense kept Missouri under 7 points for most of the game into the 4th qtr. Knowles team was ranked in the top 3 in defense all year and what game did they give up this many points? If this happens again I'll be worried but what is there to make you think Knowles in hapless when it comes to coaching defense? Before Oregon they were the no 1 Defense in the country. Oregon scores points and there were mental breakdowns by players I think this was much more the cause than the scheme.

Teams lose, Were still ranked #4,  it's more important how you react and recover, time to move on it's been beat to death and 2 more weeks of analysis from people who can not change a thing is useless. We have a game next week against a decent Nebraska team, to dwell on Oregon is pointless!

Oregon was getting the ball out of the QB's hand in 2 secs by design most of the night, it's hard to get to the Qb when they did that. he threw several passes away. Oregon was very lucky every thing they tried worked and they made some big plays. Knowles got caught in the old Cover zero or Cover 1 several times last night.

Love to see it but this team has a lot to clean up, some selfishness showed up last night and the old normal Ryan Day mistakes also showed up. Then again everything that Oregon tried worked, the taking the ball away, the Waterboy kickoff, the 4 sec runoff for too many players on the field.They were lucky. Curry played a couple plays last night he almost got home at the qb he created pressure. Why does he not play more? 

Please explain the Jack Position, does it mean you are in 5-2-4 because if you rush another player you have 4db’s or in a 5-1-5 I wish no one had ever brought THE JACK up!!!  That was what Knowles did with a couple players that he didn’t want to take off the field. The problem is the discipline of the players who have been here since 1990, JT blows his contain and chases the RB lets the QB run 27 yards for a TD, You learn in Youth League that if you are the DE your man on the option or read option is the QB PERIOD! This defense is mistake prone! On this play the RB would not have gotten the 1st down. JT just blew his assignment. Also for the OP this is Cover 1 press man, you can run anything you want but if your players break down and miss assignments it won't work.

Press Zero and Cover 1 are not complicated defenses, for what ever reason Knowles tried to play cover zero and cover 1 against Oregon? Putting Burke in a 1 on 1 match up instead of keeping the plays in front of you with safety help. What time we played zone we did a decent job of stopping them. 2 big plays were the game changers.

Some bad discipline on a few plays, Knowles had a bad game plan the 1st half. Simple as that
