They should have given the option of resetting the clock on any defensive penalty in the last two minutes that gets marked off from the original line of scrimmage. That takes away a potential gained advantage from things like defensive holding and defensive pass interference which are sometimes committed on purpose to gain an advantage in those last second situations.
Wow, Ohio State has been totally dominated on both sides of the ball in the 4th quarter against those teams. No stops and no turnovers by the defense. The only drive that did not end up in points was a missed fg.
And way too many empty drives by the offense.
The coaches and players need to do some serious soul searching and fix that.
It does seem that the opponents in those games figure out what OSU is doing by the 4th quarter and make adjustments while we don't.
But we sure are awesome in the third quarter against overmatched opponents.
It is actually 10 yards in college, but if a team is 20 yards out of field goal range with 10 seconds left, it is a smart move
Cannot end on a defensive penalty
This scenario has happened. A team is 20 yards out of fieldgoal range. Ten seconds left. The defensive back holds the best wide receiver on the line of scrimmage. The defense is rewarded for a penalty.
11 seconds, 25 yards out of field goal range. A defensive back is beaten 27 yards downfield and commits pass interference on purpose ( or unintentionally).
The defense benefits by a penalty.
They should have given the offense the option of resetting the clock that 5 to 7 seconds on any defensive penalty in the last minutes to close all such loopholes. What is to stop the defense from holding the best deep offensive threat? It is only 5 yards and the time comes off.
You are only adding 5 to 7 seconds back to the clock for a play that technically did not occur once the offense accepts the penalty. It would not create a bunch of additional issues.

The straight up pass rush over and over is frustrating.
Seems like they were very afraid of Gabriel escaping the pocket. He is not very big and not overly fast.
How does a 5'10" quarterback have so many wide open passing lanes throwing from the pocket? Seems as though our D linemen could have knocked down a couple passes. The only person that I remember getting a hand on a pass at the line of scrimmage was Downs on a blitz. He was so comfortable from the pocket the whole game. I know our ends are not explosive, but it seems that our tackles could have gotten more push up the middle to limit the ability to step up. Looking forward to the film study this week. Hope he expands it a little since there seems to be so much to break down. Our lines were supposedly superior coming in, especially with their top defensive lineman out.
Our O line did not run block very well. How much did the noise impact them? Is it hard to fire off the snap when you can't hear? Seemed like we were also in a bit of a rut with our run calls. Was there something that Oregon was doing that took away our running game? They did seem to have their safeties up a lot. And their "little" defensive backs sure seemed to tackle well. Better than we did against their back. Did not seem like we had a run longer than 3 yards the whole second half, or perhaps the whole game other than Hendersons two long back to back runs.
Lanning absolutely brought the extra defender onto the field on purpose. Smart move to steal time. Tressel used to steal a little extra time at the end of games by having an offensive lineman jump just before the snap.
Now that college football has a 2 minute warning, they should have end of half/game options. The offense should be given the option of resetting the game clock when the defense commits a penalty. Really easy change that helps protect the integrity of the game.
One point I disagree wirh is that Oregon thwarted our deep passing game. A deep passing game is something we basically don't have this year. We hardly ever throw deep, and when we do, Howard usually underthrows the ball. The one weakness in his game. Oregon did stop our long pass plays that rely on yards after catch. In the second half, they brought their safeties up to stop the run becausr we do not even try to stretch the field with long throws. Gotta do it a few times to keep the good defenses of top opponents honest. We have the guys and the passing schemes to get behind the defense. Do it once in a while. Smith looks like he is capable of exploding past anyone. On our one deep pass, he had blown past the defender before he had to come back once again for an underthrown deep ball. Deep throws should be the easiest passes when your guy gets a step or two beyond the defender. Hope Howard hits a couple against Nebraska to give Penn State more field to defend vertically.
With the offense seeming a bit clunky, it still put up 31 points while starting every drive inside our own 26 yard line. Anyone would take that. They earned all their points.
It is not a dead ball penalty. It is only a penalty when the ball is snapped. The offense can run the play and take a shot. Now there should be an option to reset the clock in end of game situations as a smart defense can take advantage of the situation and have 15 players on the field to prevent a big play.
May have been a great coaching move by lanning bringing an extra defender onto the field at 10 seconds knowing that the rules allow the play to proceed and time run off. While also knowing that the 5 yard penalty does not get us into field goal range.
Tressel used to have an o lineman jump just before the snap while milking the clock to run extra seconds off at the end of games.
Downfield blocking has been the biggest improvement in the team's play this year. With all the hype and attention that Jeremiah Smith and Egbuka are getting, Tate's great play is getting overlooked a bit. He is a real force blocking downfield. You can feel his blocks on the screen. Add in his great route running and pass catching abilities and he is quietly turning himself into one of the best receivers in the country. A great all around receiver. Keep up all the hard work along with your brothers, it is very clearly helping the team reach the goal. Not going unnoticed.
They could definitely work something out with state farm if all-state falls through...
Now that could be a bit of a tough sell for the catholics and the state of Washington...but never say never in the current college athletics environment...

Just like Zeke
Looked like Knowles overthought things with his defensive gameplan. Seemed overly worried about a mobile quarterback. Tried to contain him in the pocket while playing a soft zone so the defensive backs could make a play on him if he escaped the pocket. All that plan did was give him and his receivers some easy completions and built their confidence. He had completed nearly every pass through most of the first half.
I hope that the team realizes that it starts Saturday.
And you cannot leave out the commitment of the receivers blocking downfield, everyone doing their job on every play. Chip's offense seems to have a lot of effective downfield blocking helping spring the really explosive plays.
The team and coach Day keep referring to it as an improvement week. Now just stay away from any bad decisions at college parties this week.
Not really concerned about any polls. In the end, we are going to have to go into Atlanta in a de facto home game against Georgia to win the big prize. That would "leave no doubt"
Kind of deja vu, as we played Georgia in Atlanta two years ago for the de facto national champuonship.
The thing is, even if we leap Georgia and get the first seed, if things go as expected, we would meet Georgia in the national championship game in Atlanta. Basically another home game for them just like the playoff game two years ago. That is just annoying. Need to work some Northern sites into the playoff and championship.
I definitely agree. Hancock did make contact with the crown and put himself at risk. It was targeting per tge rule as written. Nothing about the Burke hit was targeting. I do not like the rule that allows guys in a replay booth to call penalties after the fact. I still have nightmares from the Clemson game, and that was not targeting either.
