Lol, captain obvious Knowles. They were barely average in any areas.
Long and short of it: we aren’t winning any championships with that level of play. We won’t even make the BTCG. Have to get much, much better. A 1 point loss on the road to a top 5 team isn’t awful, but man we looked awful for large portions of the game.
The Ducks were a bad offensive interference call from losing the game, so a one-point win isn't exactly supporting the "clearly better team" theory. Gabriel, the most accurate passer in the country, coming into play last night, completed only 67% of his passes for 341 yards. Howard completed 80% of his passes for a grand total of 15 fewer yards (326). They both threw 2 touchdowns. I'm not seeing the clearly better scenario here ??
The Ducks did out-rush the Buckeyes by a whopping 14 yards (155 / 141), so again, I'm not seeing the clearly better comparison ...
The Ducks are a good team - they beat the common team, the Spartans, roughly the same way we did, so let's give them credit - they're a good team .... but, I think we're better. Let's see how they do when we meet them in the BIG finals and they have to get on a plane and go through a couple of time zones to play us. I have no doubt we'll beat them .....
Pretty even....first throw probably an int last OPI ridiculous....so offsetting crap all day...the fumble from Judkins...preventable I guess but that dude was massive. I think it was the oline not getting g set in the end costing us 7 seconds....Will was ready and then he tried for center and a yard or two more....if he had the 7 this would have been a reasonable FG attempt game over.
Not to mention the "trick" onside kick, that lead to a fg. Losing the to battle 2-0. We shot ourselves in the foot over and over again, and still probably should have won this game.
From “clearly better” to “we lost but we’re better”. An interesting trip on both sides of that coin. Neither seems right to me. Losing but claiming we are better sounds way too much like the Michigan fans we love to hate
They beat the Spartans at home after only six days rest and travelling three time zones away. We beat the Spartans on the road. We also scored one more touchdown and had to "give" the Spartans their lone score. The Spartans put two legitimate scores on the Ducks. We lost because we are still struggling to get a pass rush (https://www.landgrantholyland.com/2024/10/13/24268967/ohio-state-buckeye...) and Burke looking like . . . well, not Burke (Is he injured?). We still would have won the dumb call at the end notwithstanding with some decent time management. I'm still mad, which is unimportant. I hope the team is too. I'm loyal till its all over, but there are changes that need to be made . . . to make EVERYONE happier. Go Bucks!
If your opponent knocks you on your ass, honor the game and RESPECT him. But Gentlemen, no bastard ever won a football game by getting knocked on his ass. You won it by knocking the other poor dumb bastard on his ass and making HIM respect YOU!!
A lot of people don't focus on the trenches or know what to look for. Hope we improve but on offense injuries hurt us and lack of capable subs, apparently, brings heavy legs for our DTS. Hope the morale holds up. Lot of guys came back with certain goals. Can't believe our CB performance.
Weve seen them at their best. They seen us at our worst this year. I promise you we will dance again. Much respect to them but we played bad and loss by 1 point. Chew on that! pic.twitter.com/38DJV7CcA3

I am. That was a shit show, and Ohio State lost by 1 on the road and they played with their hair on fire for 60 minutes. Not only that, they blew their wad and are officially on upset alert.
Jim Knowsless did not have the defense ready for this game & did not make adjustments at half. What a poorly prepared unit. Coach Day picked him & Frye & neither have delivered.
Something has been wrong with OSU blitzes since Knowles got here. It’s not like we never blitz , but what it IS like is that it looks pretty much the same and rarely gets home. It’s a safety up the middle getting picked up. And of course the defense must be designed to avoid contact between the ends and the QB because that doesn’t happen either.
Absolutely not. Player for player we are better. we didn't show it last night in their stadium. Our big game coaching is so suspect. We had the ball at their 27 yd line. If we kick that and win, then are we better?
Ohio State has the better talent, but Oregon is definitely the better team because of better coaching, fewer mistakes, and better clock management (the latter two are due to the former).
They are not better. They have a great home field advantage. I think our D can must and will improve, and the coaches (Ryan Day) need to manage the game better than they did. Not going to call Oregon better at this point. OSU is still a top 5 team to me.
As always, day and his staff were out coached. I was never a fan of Knowles and my son is sick and tired of hearing me say it. Guess he'll hear it more now. All year the front 4 have failed to apply pressure to the QBs. I seen it from day one. On that long play, the defense wasn't set. Except for one game against Missouri, the offense played well enough to win the game. The defense was the issue. All that talk about all that talent. Was just that, talk. So we either have a talent problem or a coaching problem.
All year the front 4 have failed to apply pressure to the QBs.
Straight up not true. They were awful this game but the revisionist nonsense is always the dumbest part of losses. Coming into the game Ohio State had the highest pressure rate in the country.
The front 4 gets pressure against bad teams, who cares? Then they play someone good and get totally stoned. JTT and Jack are good all-around DEs, but neither of them is overly quick or gets pressure consistently against good teams. We had zero pass rush all night, our DL got whipped. That is why we lost this game. Oregon bullied us up front.
The MSU coaches who said Oregon was better in the trenches were proven correct tonight.
The MSU coaches who said Oregon was better in the trenches were proven correct tonight.
No they weren’t. Neither team got a sack (yes I know Oregon gets one cause Howard fell). Ohio State’s rushed for 5.65 ypc. Oregon’s 5. Ohio State had 2 TFLs to Oregon’s 3. The difference in the game was turnovers accounting for 9 of Oregon’s points on very short fields. And that the secondary, mainly Burke was getting cooked. Both offenses were dominant passing and rushing
I meant to say Ohio State’s RBs averaged 5.65 ypc. Also yes if you remove good plays then the offense looks worse. Congrats on that novel thought. If you remove the 32 points Oregon scored their offense sucked
They also had by far statistically the best defense in the nation. How’d that turn out?
I legitimately have no clue how they were the highest rated pressure team in football. Even against the scrubs they have played thus far, it still didn’t seem like they were getting any pressure a lot of the time. Was really pretty concerning.
It's coaching. Take a look at the IT'S TEZ TIME video at about 5 seconds. 2 Guys rushing the QB and 5 guys defending 1 Oregon player in the middle of the field.
First and goal at the five and Arch is getting the ball.
Burke lost a lot of money last night. Reminded me of my sandlot days: you go long and I'll hit you. The back four can throw all of their BIA shirts and hats in the trash.
I'm at the age where food has taken the place of sex in my life. In fact, I've just had a mirror put over my kitchen table. - Rodney Dangerfield
IGB, Ransom, Downs, & Hancock (minus his DPI) were all fine in coverage. It was literally just Burke. All game Oregon was going at Burke. Gabriel had 350ish yards. It would not shock me if Denzel gave up 200 of them.
Denzel Burke Burnt Toast. Always felt he was a little overrated. Just because he started as a freshman out of need didn't make him BIA let alone prove he was at the level of the top guys over the last 10+ years. Two interceptions in his first three seasons? Against Rutgers & Youngstown State. Picking on one guy sucks, but the other team picking on him is worse...
That defense was ugly for the most part. D Burke was identified by the Oregon coaches as a weak point and they were proven correct unfortunately... If Downs covered away from Burkes side of the field - Oregon was taking that every time and it worked like a charm. That said, OSU was still driving for the win even after all of the trick plays and sneaky onside kicks. They have to get JJ involved before the second half though
Urban Meyer >Jim Harbaugh for ever and ever, Amen. 0
All these guys that came back on defense didn't do anything. Ransom and Simon in particular kept whiffing and missing tackles. I'll be glad for them all to move on after this year. The edge rushers have to be the most uninspiring pair of 5*'s in cfb with the lack of production. Knowles is getting paid $2M to put out this scheme that gets taken to school by any talent equated offense, every year. Looks like he hasn't learned anything the last 2 years.
I’ve been screaming about not having a pass rush since Chase Young. Looking back to 2019, we didn’t have a pass rush against wispy in the BTCG or against Clemson. I’m so sick and tired of LJ being above criticism. His guys haven’t done shit in a meaningful game in years.
I suppose Burke's failures are coaching failures in that Knowles never relieved him for Matthews. Sometimes, if a player is having a bad day, you have to at least consider the possibility of letting him take some time off to recalibrate, no?
"There is a force that makes us all brothers, no one goes his way alone." --Woody Hayes
Is Walton to blame for not sitting Burke? I wonder if constraints have been placed on Knowles. Larry Johnson was not happy about the bullet position that Knowles has employed with success at other schools but he has not been allowed to fully implement that position at OSU. I wonder if personel decisions are left up to position coaches and Knowles is only in charge of scheme and defensive calls using the players provided to him.
Stop with this bullshit. They ran the Jack in 2022. Turns out when your roster doesn’t have a hybrid player forcing it onto guys not built for it makes it not work. And they’ve actively recruited for it. The issue with the dline isn’t the lack of using the Jack.
Dude, we lost the turnover battle, lost an onside kick, and still would have won the game, on the road, against a top 5 team, if not for a questionable OPI call.
PSU should have lost to an awful USC team.
Can we please stop acting like we were just curb stomped by Maryland???
I agree. Not our best game, but getting beat on the road by one point to the number 3 team in the nation doesn’t indicate the sky is falling. This year has been full of top 10 teams getting beat by unranked opponents. Outside of Texas, nobody has looked dominant.
Bro you know a-lot of our fans are soft asses who never played the game before . Those young men lost by 1 point and fans are talking down on them as if it was Vandy who whooped our asses. Oregon is the #2 team in the country. Go back to Columbus and figure this shit out. The 2014 team lost too and look at what happened. Stop with the blame game and address this shit like MEN… Lets reload that mf clip and focus on Nebraska… #GoBucks
Dope ppl do Dope things.. Instead of fighting and pointing fingers let’s help find a solution.. Be Great Not Good!!
You know what the problem is, the defensive line causes no disruption. JT and Jack are not good enough. They don't have that quick twitch to fire off. The linebackers are slow and plodding again, they can't blitz as they aren't fast enough to get past linemen before being stopped and they can't cover tight ends like at all. And for some reason we chose tonight to play press man coverage when against less competition it was all playing off the receivers. This isn't close to being the nest defense in the big ten let alone the country.
Denzel Burke is good on zone coverage, he is bad at press man, and apparently the tackling issues have returned why because apparently we don't tackle in practice
We didn’t play a bunch of press man yesterday. They were still playing a ton of quarters or quarter quarter half coverages. The issue was Burke was getting roasted on those.
JTT and Jack are just not elite. They are solid/decent/ good players who are similar. Both more strong than quick, neither beats good OL themselves. This DL lacks a true speed rush type player. The DL got whipped, and that was the biggest reason we lost. The secondary is going to look bad against those WRs and that QB when the QB can stand in the pocket with zero pressure all night.
Games are won and lost in the trenches. And tonight we lost in the trenches.
100 percent. Problem? Day does think that way. He talks that way but look at the dudes. How many 4-5 stars on Oline ? We some on Dline but they are not being developed.
500 yards...repeat after me, 500 yards. Scheme. Tackling. Chunk plays. Third down failures. Coach Knowles, I was there. And your guys were perplexed There. Was. No. Defense. Period.
I’m no fan of Knowles, but was he supposed to come out of the booth and cover the WR’s himself? We lost this specific game because of Denzel Burke. Period.
I’m officially done with Knowles. They should leave this clown in Oregon. Every big game it’s the same shit with this dolt. Literally cost us a national title with his collapse against Georgia.
Disappointed that Knowles would coddle Burke. That's the whole problem with this coaching staff. These players have been coached with tough love before. Most of them thrive off of it. You would never hear Saban or Meyer sugar coat a performance like that. The losses against similarly talented teams will be the norm until the program seeks a competitive edge.
Does he have enough sway to rotate or bench Burke? To pull a DE or DL off the field in lieu of a situational pass rusher or Jack defender? I'm not sure he does.
The defense lost us this game. Yes, Knowles is the coordinator of the defense. But still I am hesitant to put Knowles solely in the crosshairs. To defend the pass, you rush the passer and play coverage. If the front 4 cannot consistently rush the passer, is Knowles really to blame for Burke and the coverage behind the front? I am not so sure. He sees the problems. I know he does. He cannot create enough confusion and panic in opposing QBs without manufacturing pressure like he would like. No one will get to the QB in 2.5 seconds on a down by down basis without confusing blocking schemes. That is what his Jack was designed to do. We are not letting Knowles run his scheme. Unfortunately, we found out tonight that our DB coverage is not elite against equated talent.
Day might not like playing more aggressive on the defensive side of the ball. He may think that the defense cannot lose the game and the offense will win it. But tonight the offense did not win it, and the defense did lose it. We must force the issue and take opposing offenses out of what they would like to do. Gabriel was not made uncomfortable at all in this game.
The coaching staff and roster will not be changed this year. We have the minds and the horses to win it all. Yet adjustments still need to be made. Will they play to win or keep the status quo.....hoping that Jack and JT get home?
Stop it. We ran a shit ton of sim pressures yesterday and even they weren’t getting home. It doesn’t matter if you have a Jack, Star, Bullet, Wolf or whatever on the field if no dlineman is winning 1 on 1 reps.
It's so rare that our defense actually disrupts a play or blows it up in the backfield. The ball is basically just getting snapped and they only react to whatever the offense decides to do. Simply occupying space.
Bend but don't break is trash. All that bending you just wear yourself out and get run over at the end.
Guys, it’s my fault. I bought a jersey in 2020 right after the Clemson game and we haven’t won a big game since. It’s cursed. So I’m gonna sell it, and then everything’s gonna be cool, ok? Ok.
I said last week that I wished we had more pressure from the d-line. I don’t know what the answer is, but I’m ready for a change at the defensive coordinator position coach.
I just want to see the defensive numbers when Knowles goes up against the better offenses (offenses or highly ranked teams in top 15) during his tenure at OSU. I'm just tired of all the lies and misinformation the Buckeyes media and Ohio State push towards this team over the years. There is too much false hope with this team and it stirs up this fanbase with delusions of grandeur how special this team is. I'm at the point you need to prove it on the field against the better opponents not Akron, Marshall, Iowa and the rest of those f..king cupcakes. Beat PSU, Indiana and Michigan otherwise STFU media and move to next season.
The defensive scheme and execution was garbage. The offensive scheme was underwhelming at best. It looked to me like Day was calling many of the plays rather than Kelly. There was almost zero risk-taking and no creativity on either side of the ball. Have the linebackers improved with Lauranitis as their full-time coach? I haven't seen it. Not sure that Knowles is the defensive coach we need. Downs was barely a factor. Too many self-inflicted mistakes.
Maybe, just maybe, this will light the fire and remove the leash holding the offense and defense back. Play like it's one-and-done from here on out. We can still achieve all of our goals and win the national championship. If they don't then it's time to reconsider coaching staff as the problem.
Alcohol will not solve any of your problems, but then again, neither will milk or water.
Agree on Day calling plays in the fourth quarter. That was classic Day turtling. When I saw a receiver running straight to the sideline behind the line of scrimmage on a do-or-die last drive, I thought "Ryan Day." And, of course, that is where ball went.
First, hats off to the Ducks. They played a great game and were well coached. They have come along way since this years opening game.
Ball security. We have been sloppy at times this year and it was bound to cost us when we played a good team.
The last drive was terrible. This is on the OC. You have a time out. Use the middle of the dam field.
The defense needs help, both coaching and leadership. Who is the vocal leader of the group? Get into your teammates face and call them out when they aren’t getting it done. I had hoped Downs would be this guy. And I have no idea what our defensive plan is? Pressure or contain? Figure it out and start to perfect it.
Finally I think this was any h needed wake up call. Everyone at the Woody Hayes center needs to quit listening to all of the hype and start working their butts off in practice and in the film room. You don’t just show up and get the national championship trophy handed to you. You need to work your butt off ever single day. I just don’t see this type of aggressiveness and focus.
Good post. I think we, as Buckeye fans, struggle the most when the team gets outcoached, outplayed, and loses what could still have been a win. The last drive was fine. Freshman pushes off just a little too much, Howard has to get down a second earlier...
Oregon had a great homefield advantage. Harmon made a great play to steal the ball from Judkins. Lanning successfully focused on field position. The one shot the Buckeyes had at better position ended up a game changer when the kickoff line drive wasn't recovered. Lanning calls that because he knows he needs something to change the balance.
The wasted drive with three offensive penalties is frustrating because that's purely on coaching not preparing the team for a big "matchup" road game. You just don't see a team fall apart like that... not average teams, let alone a wannabe "elite" team.
Like you said, wake up call. Stop acting like you've been there. At this point you're not getting there unless everyone does better.
I was at the Georgia game. This is just another variation of that same theme. We do not get the stops in big games. We always have the lead - until we don't. Knowles seems to have the same quotebook after these brutal losses. Our clock management at the end of games, though. . .
The seat under Knowles is starting to get a little hotter. In my opinion, he’s been exposed in nearly every big game. Bend don’t break, well the dam broke tonight and every time Oregon got the ball I knew they would score. I was beyond frustrating and the narrative that Ohio State is soft will continue.
While it's tough to he negative after a 1 point loss on the road to a top 5 team, some questions need to answered. We're either running Knowles's defense or we're not, sorry LJ we pay this man 2 million a year to be the coordinator and your guys up front aren't producing. I'm tired of hearing about qb pressures vs sacks, you need sacks it's the difference between 3rd and 10 or 3rd and 17. The BIA talk needs to go away also, they couldn't cover anyone tonight. We were getting carved up tonight anyway, why not be more aggressive and blitz it couldn't have been any worse. All this teams goals are still on the table, but some come to Jesus conversations need to he had or this roster is going to be wasted.
Two losses at most and our only losses are to top 5 teams on the road, we probably sneak into the playoffs anyway. That being said, please bench Burke. Make him the 4th corner tops.
At least the 2021 version of this defense that also gave up a million yards also created negative plays. We had the worst of both versions, last night.
The ironic thing is that in 2021 against Oregon, the defense gave up 505 yards and were the main reason OSU lost that game. It also resulted in Kerry Coombs being demoted. Last night, the guy who was brought in to fix that defense, called a game where Oregon earned 496 yards and the defense was the main reason they lost the game.
Vrable is an analyst for the Browns right now. I bet you got get him as DC next year. I think you could go Kelly or Hartline HC next year. Fickell may also be available for DC.
Vrabel was the DC for the Texans the year before he went to Tennessee. Houston in 2016 had the #1 defense by yards and #11 by points. 2017 last in both. 2018 #4 in points, 11th in yards. Vrabel is a bad DC
Yes, Burke got cooked like bacon last night. But....where was the safety help? Serious question.
Ryan Day. Knowles. Another big game loss. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. I don't see an end to that cycle. This is Ryan Day's 6th season. He has one win vs. Clemson. His teams have beaten Penn State and Notre Dame. And....no one else that mattered.
I’ve said this since day one Knowles is a fraud. The guy is all fake hype. He gets the lump against better competition. This defense has no foot speed and tackles like a bunch of candy asses. But you keep thinking that Knowles is the answer. When TTUN bullies, pushes and shoves his defense all day long AGAIN maybe they will finally fire his overrated ass and send him and his fake hype BS packing.
If you can’t make a fourth and one, you don't deserve to win.
I thought Knowles was questionable hire from the beginning. He came from big 12 where they play no defense. Go get an SEC d coordinator. I’ve never seen a coach do less with more.
They should have went freeman over combs. Not sure where that would have led to today, but it would have been better than a forced hire to start over on D after combs was let go.
The dif between cfb fans and nfl fans is fascinating. Every week in the nfl you see good teams lose to lousy teams. It's disappointing, but then you get ready for next week. The new cfb has never been more nfl-like, but our fans are still like fire everybody, all the players are bums, etc. Feel how you feel, I guess lol.
The defense gave up 50s yards of offense. Its not just about the win/loss. This team has no chance at NC with the defense playing this way.
In CFB to secure a bye you can lose 1 game at most. You can lose 2 at most to guarantee yourself a playoff spot. In the NFL, can you only afford 2 losses to make the playoff?
Knowles knows squat. BIG 12 DC what in the hell did you expect? That conf is like an arena league. Guru my ass. Never seen a HC or staff squander so much talent in my life.
The elephant in the room has always been Larry Johnson. Knowles is supposed to be the DC yet it's still Larry's line that's hands off. That's just never going to work. Knowles is trying to run modern defensive schemes and then is hamstrung by what Johnson wants to do with th defensive line. There's zero creativity. How often do we see pre snap movement, how often do we see 4 defensive ends in at once, how often do we see stunts, we just don't because it's always hat on hat, old school.
That's not on Knowles, that's on Coach Day...
I also think big picture it gets super complicated because so many of these kids came back. That makes it tough to sit them because you don't want to set that precedent. That's always tricky..
The bigger issue imo is kids not doing their jobs. Burke just got beat, he needed help, Styles is learning, it's a process, there are going to be growing pains..........but JT Tuimoloau is a freaking senior who's been here forever.. watch that 3rd and 2 play where Gabriel goes for 27 yards and a TD. JT Tuimoloau has the edge, that's all Knowles is asking him to do, and he fucking freelances trying to make a play, and Gabriel goes 27 yards untouched. That garbage has happened every game. Where dudes refuse to trust the play call and refuse to trust the 10 guys out there with them. It's not just JT Tuimoloau, plenty of other examples..
Coach Day has to lean on Larry Johnson and tell him it's Knowles ship to run, if Larry Johnson pushes back, you ask him to leave..
People posted the same things about LJ the past 2 seasons or almost about the time Chase Young left. Then....he landed the Houston kid as a recruit and all was forgiven. It should've been a clue when Marshall ran right at us and other little sisters did too. We kept them out of the endzone so we deluded ourselves that all was OK. Until....it wasn't or isn't.
Not one player on this defense would start on the 2014 team.
Jim Knowles sucks
Denzel Burnt is one of the worst tacklers I have ever seen and always has been. He’s honestly lucky to be walking after some of the shitty tackles he’s had over the years. Hopefully he hits the transfer portal today.
The two DE’s are overrated and will be not go anywhere in the NFL.
The corners are not good. Igibosin can’t shed blocks and multiple guys coverage strategy was to let the guy blow past them then hold them and hope the refs don’t see it. The only player on defense that has lived up to their nil demands is Downs.
Need more guys from NEW HAMPSHIRE coaching this team ... freakin choke artist AGAIN! Couldn't win with Stroud and Harrison and can't win with this team either - a damn joke!
How does the defense get much better this year.. totally changing schematics, vhanging personnel? just wondering how to do so? or just play bend dont break, hold teams to fgs...
The defense has already cost OSU a national championship vs Georgia.
The defense cost them twice vs Michigan including last year when they needed one stop but allowed Michigan to salt away the clock.
And it has cost them so far this season. Time to recover but we are getting a large sample size of the defense in big games. Guys look lost, tacking fails them, they are out of position, zero pressure on the QB.
We have 11 NFL caliber players on DEF who start. So much experience. So many top tier recruits. This was the year they were to impose their will and dictate to the offenses *** Hey Jim, keep it simple, and let these guys loose. Seems you have over complicated your system and asking our D to play on its heels. We saw the chinks in the armour vs Marshall, and MSU…and please Throw in some twists and stunts with our DL, and please stop BLITZING our safties from from the moon. Go BUCKS

I always look at have coaches put players in right position to make plays. Simon was awful even when unblocked. Nightmare for me was kept seeing styles in backfield early and whiffing Gabriel. He’s 6’5”, supposedly exudes athleticism and can’t tackle worth a shit. He was right there inches away way early enough and Gabriel did not make any big move he just dang whiffed. Could have been/should have been a big play.

To play poorly and have two goal line stands shows that we have the talent. However, the defense is constantly out of position and whiff on tackles that could change the game.
Another terrible coaching job by Knowles in a big game. Can we fire this overpaid professor? I really thought having this much experience coming back would make a difference but it obviously does not. Time to move on
2 MILLION per for the defense to collapse in virtually every huge game Ohio State has played since Knowles arrived.
1) 2022 Vs ttun (got ZERO pressure on McCarthy and got gashed by Edwards)
2) 2022 CFP Vs UGA (could not hold a TWO TD lead in the 4th qtr)
2) 2023 Vs ttun (they could NOT get off the the field in the 4th qtr)
3) Oregon last night (gave up 500 yards offense, got ZERO pressure)
Jim Knowles is stealing money from OSU; that they look good when the talent isn't even remotely comparable isn't why they choose to pay Knowles 2 MILLION DOLLARS per season, winning the HUGE games - the-biggest-stages-and-brightest lights games - is the reason Knowles gets that kind of money... and he has failed IN TOTALITY in that regard.
There are jobs on the line now, and Ryan Day's is one of them. This season is FAR from over, but there is no more room for losing.
Football is still a game based on physicality. The LOS is where games are won and lost. OSU under day has not embraced that concept. Finesse and scheme are really important, but so is being able to punch someone in the mouth and in these games with quality teams it's OSU that repeatedly loses the LOS and gets punched. They're a soft bunch.
Sawyer seemed like he was hurt. JTT is a built like a DT playing DE. And the DTs got pushed around at times. A horrendous showing up front but only Burke was worse. Idk how Burke can be so putrid, also looked like he was slow.
The DEs, plus maybe sending a safety or a LB at least once a quarter, would have given Gabriel less time to slow cook Burke all night long.
If you see someone getting blown up for an hour, maybe try to give them some help. Burke is losing, ok, fine, how about we get some pressure to speed up Gabriel's decision making (we KNOW he throws INTs when he hurries)? OR disguise helping Burke... either way, do something. Anything.
LJ and Knowles left a lot to be desired last night, along with the execution.
On the read option play Dillon scored the 20+ yd TD, JT crashed down on the running back, didn’t read crap and Lanthom took a terrible angle on Dillon. Their WR was blocking the CB well and poof, easy walk in TD. D was the issue last night on many levels. Having 4 times as many penalties was the issue last night. Having two turnovers on an evenly matched talent level game was the issue last night. Just get better boys.
The offense played well last night and the playcalling was good. The O-line moved the LOS, we got short yardage first downs, and they only gave up 1 sack that was really on Howard.
The defense and penalties were the problem. The defense was playing cover 4 because they were worried about the slot receivers running seam routes which is why you weren’t seeing much safety help for Burke. And Burke was really bad. He was the weak link. There was one play where he was arguing with Hancock about a WR running a corner route right in front of him while Hancock was covering a WR in the flat. But the Dline was a problem as well, Tyleik is the only guy on that line that should even be considered a high draft pick. JT is on pace for 6 sacks this season 1 more that last year and Sawyer on pace for 3 which is like 4 less than last year. I don’t care if we are the highest rated team in pressure rate, our DEs don’t get sacks and the sacks are more important.
Coach Day loses yet another big game again. 2-7 against Top 5 teams. 1-3 against Michigan. No Big Ten Championships since 2020. No National Championships. He chokes and plays far too conservatively on the big stage. That’s the main problem.
Coach Knowles defense is too complicated. Our DL has not gotten pressure in most games and yesterday did not control the LOS. JT flashed at times but where was JS? We need to get Caden Curry and other DEs much more playing time. Burke was abused yesterday and his tackling was abysmal. Why was he not replaced by Matthews? The rest of the secondary was fine. The linebackers were not impactful.
Knowles and Larry Johnson need to go. The D-Line consistently is never able to get pressure on the Qb. We have not had any good pass rushers since the Bosa brothers and Chase young.
Under Knowles, our defense looks very vanilla. Lack of disguising coverages and very little blitzing. The defense is too reactionary vs being aggressive.
Defense has been over-hyped since Fall practice. All the NFL draft choices. Even Mich St and Marshall exposed OSU's D a bit. What I don't understand is in the most critical plays of games LJ doesn't have his best linemen in the game? Denzel Burke cost himself a lot of draft capital last night.
"We're going to give the ball to dumb-ass and grind meat"--Woody Hayes
This defense was exposed badly last night. Looked like the Kerry Coombs defense of 2021. LJ hasn't produced a line that could rush and get to the passer since 2019. The offense will have to score 40 every game against talent-equated teams to win.
This won't be popular on here for the homers. However, Day needs replaced! 3 loses to Shitigan in a row. Loses in every big game since becoming HC. Millions of dollars spent on a allstar team, and nothing to show for it He is the one common person in this mess! I guess we need to spend 40 million dollars next year to win big games? If Day doesn't convince starters to return this year, and buy transfers from Alabama he would have been on the real Hotseat.
I was ready after the 2nd um loss. I don't see him lasting past this year without a championship. Too many people spending too much money in NIL for Cooper 2.0. That being said, this team is still talented enough to win it all.
Was extremely disappointing seeing the D get gashed on the ground. Oregon got 5-6 yards on the ground all night. Trench play rearing its ugly head again.
I'm not trying to say we need to fire Ryan. But he's had 6 years now, and we keep seeing the same problem. So what's the solution at this point? .
I would answer by saying that if we do not make the 12 team playoff or get thoroughly embarrassed by someone else, due consideration will be given by the new AD. But otherwise, no. Day doesn't coach the defense.
Knowles wet the bed, but I'm not letting LJ off of the hook either. JT and JS and the rest of the DL were non-existent. 5-star talent? Not even close. New coaching and new ideas needed badly with a strong identity of physicality. We are missing the latter.
This game turned out how I thought. Equal teams whose offenses could not be stopped by the others defense, I thought an over under should have been 70. And that the last to team to score would win.
When Oregon and Ohio State meet in the Big Ten Title game Oregon has to make the long trip. Thus far 90% of Big Ten teams that make the long trip loses. Ohio State wins the Big Ten Title rather easily
2 things that stood out to me. 1. I dont mean to call anyone out, but our pass rush from our 2 5 star defensive ends has been lackluster this year. It is reasonable to expect at least a sack or two in a big game from one of them outside of a blitz. That has been disappointing. We have seen them flash at times, but not on a consistent basis. We can't expect to have Penn State JT every game, but maybe better overall play to impact the game.
2. Defensive play calling is difficult to understand. They didn't send effective blitzes nearly as much as I thought they would. That allowed Gabriel to get into a rhythm and shred our secondary. You have to generate pressure and attack in big games. Send the blitzes and let your athletes in the secondary step up. Burke struggled mightily, but you replace him temporarily instead of changing your play calling.
Is Reese injured? That kid didn't even see the field last night and he's the best pure ILB they have. Styles and Simon can run bit can't fill or shed. You have two soft linebacker playing behind a soft overrated DL. The cherry on top is your "best"corner should never, ever be asked to play man again because he's such a liability. Just a bad defensive football team right now.
Predictably, here is Knowles saying that they just have to do the same things better. Hey Jim, if it doesn’t work, you try something different. It’s called adjustment, and it means learning from past performance and changing your strategies to some degree. Not doing the same damned thing again, and hoping to be perfect next time.
If bull shit was music Knowles would be TBDBITL. I hope you fools aren’t buying his line of shit. He’s been getting pretty fat off his inflated salary for awhile now. I’m not buying his line of shit. His schemes suck.
If you can’t make a fourth and one, you don't deserve to win.
The difference in this game was team speed. Ohio St was constantly playing behind because Oregon has faster athletes and our defense couldnt hang. Next time around Ohio St should think of a ball control game, run it down their throat with long drives, keep Ohio St defense off the field .
Any truth the Knowles and LJ not seeing eye to eye on Dline assignments. Have heard several times Day has given favor to LJ due to being the elder statesmen and he wants his Dline going 1 on 1 to get pressure, I see zero twists or stunts with this Dline. I know Burke played like a turd, but at some point you have to put some of this on the D line play not making the qb uncomfortable, that dude was back there texting his buddies "watch this".
I will pound you and pound you until you quit - Woody Hayes
Can't give up the big plays but still within 1 point and gave them better field position all night and extra possessions. Team loss that easily could have been a win. Just imagine if that squib kick gave us the ball at the 50 and we score a TD...
I've been saying this since we hired Knowles. HE IS NOT THE GUY! Go back and look at his ppg vs comparable talented teams like OSU at OK St in his 4 seasons there. In 18 Texas/OU averaged 41.5 ppg vs him. In 19 they averaged 35 ppg. In 20 they averaged 41 ppg. In 21 they averaged 28.5 ppg. Just go back and look at OK St games vs those 2 schools and look at in general what his defenses gave up in all their losses. They got scored a lot on!!! Also, any coach that is in his 60s and just got to a dream job or destination job like OSU is deeply concerning! It just screams that the guy is not elite. We've seen it on the field in big games vs equally talented teams and we've seen it on the recruiting trail as well. He's missed on all of top targets which were LB's. Everyone was so high on him and the D last year even after The Game when his D couldn't get off the field when it mattered most. I saw the stats today that in all our losses since he's been our DC, in those games, his D hasn't forced a punt in the 4th Quarter of those games. I did not think he had "fixed" our D at the end of last year and I called it this season that if we lose a game it'll be bc of his D. Now all that being said the players need to be held accountable here too. Everyone kept talking about how the program spent so much $$ to get new guys but they also spent a huge chunk of that $$ on roster retention. But what they bought was a big group of underachievers. Look at JTT & Sawyers sack numbers in their career..it's embarrassing. They came into the season averaging 3.5 sacks a season. They only have 1 game for both careers where they had 1.5 or more sacks in a game. That's is really embarrassing too for 2 of highest rated DE's to ever set foot on campus. At one point both guys were ranked the #1 player in the country on 247. Day bought a defensive roster that doesn't know what it takes to win the big game and bought a DC with the same problem. He is not elite in any way at all and we constantly see it year after year in big games. Also, if the rumors are true that Jim & LJ don't see eye to eye on the Jack position and there's a riff there then Day needs to man the fuck up and fix that. If Day is letting that shit go on then he's more incompetent than what we think. Knowles needs to go, LJ needs to go & Frye needs to go. Don't even get me started on Frye lol Day has built us into the Oregon teams of 08-16. Great skill guys but when facing a tough, physical team, they lose. It's always something with Day and his staff. He'll address one issue at a time and let the other concerns blow up in his face then address those in the next off season. I'm sick of it. I'm sick of Day. He can walk now. He's proven he's not elite. But we are stuck with him for the foreseeable future. We are just gonna have to get used to our Bucks not competing at the top level vs top teams. We will forever be a 1 or 2 loss team that makes the playoffs every year and we might win the first game of the playoffs but that's it. Don't forget that Chip constantly couldn't win the big game either at Oregon. He'd constantly shit himself vs physical d line teams. We have an entire staff that just has a history of not finishing the job. This is our reality now.

Yeah, uh, I would agree with that assessment. They were long way from being outstanding.
We can't stop here; this is bat country...
Yes. Terrible defense, mistakes, penalties… it’s amazing they only lost by 1 point.
Because despite the emotional coping, Oregon is on a lower tier.
Self crowned Eleven Warriors humble-off champion.
Not sure about that. They controlled the LOS. It looked easier for them then it did for us.
Absolutely did. Not sure how people can’t see that Oregon clearly looked like the better team last night on both offense and defense.
Bbc11
Not to mention the "trick" onside kick, that lead to a fg. Losing the to battle 2-0. We shot ourselves in the foot over and over again, and still probably should have won this game.
From “clearly better” to “we lost but we’re better”. An interesting trip on both sides of that coin. Neither seems right to me. Losing but claiming we are better sounds way too much like the Michigan fans we love to hate
One Shoe
At a neutral site, the Buckeyes win that game more times than not.
"Put ya' weight on it"
They beat the Spartans at home after only six days rest and travelling three time zones away.
Can’t wait to see the snap counts of who played on defense
JTNYC
I’m just glad we wore the cocaine whites.
I am. That was a shit show, and Ohio State lost by 1 on the road and they played with their hair on fire for 60 minutes. Not only that, they blew their wad and are officially on upset alert.
Self crowned Eleven Warriors humble-off champion.
Jim Knowsless did not have the defense ready for this game & did not make adjustments at half. What a poorly prepared unit. Coach Day picked him & Frye & neither have delivered.
Reading this article is like a bad dose of medicine.
Remember when the defense said at the beginning of the season they wanted more sacks and turnovers? Good times.
"It's just a football game" - Kyle McCord
More blitzing too.
Hmm
Something has been wrong with OSU blitzes since Knowles got here. It’s not like we never blitz , but what it IS like is that it looks pretty much the same and rarely gets home. It’s a safety up the middle getting picked up. And of course the defense must be designed to avoid contact between the ends and the QB because that doesn’t happen either.
Very similar to LEAVE NO DOUBT
Won't win too many games getting lit up for 5 bills, zero sacks zero turnovers zero pressure.
Fraudbaugh
Oregon is the better team plain and simple. Less mistakes, better coaching, better clock management.
Nah. They played great and won but they're not better.
"Make Helen Well"
How is “they played better and won” not better than we were?
Absolutely not. Player for player we are better. we didn't show it last night in their stadium. Our big game coaching is so suspect. We had the ball at their 27 yd line. If we kick that and win, then are we better?
buckeyeinla
Hector m Rivera
Where are you getting these YPC numbers at? Oregon averaged 5.0 YPC to OSU’s 4.3, and if you take out Henderson’s 53 yard run it gets even uglier.
I meant to say Ohio State’s RBs averaged 5.65 ypc. Also yes if you remove good plays then the offense looks worse. Congrats on that novel thought. If you remove the 32 points Oregon scored their offense sucked
Sawyer appeared to be asleep most of the game.
I really hate ttun. and dabo.
LMAO.
They also had by far statistically the best defense in the nation. How’d that turn out?
I legitimately have no clue how they were the highest rated pressure team in football. Even against the scrubs they have played thus far, it still didn’t seem like they were getting any pressure a lot of the time. Was really pretty concerning.
No one cares that we got pressure against WMU lol. They literally always disappear in these big games.
We can't stop here; this is bat country...
Guess you haven't watched the games?
Hector m Rivera
It's coaching. Take a look at the IT'S TEZ TIME video at about 5 seconds. 2 Guys rushing the QB and 5 guys defending 1 Oregon player in the middle of the field.
First and goal at the five and Arch is getting the ball.
Anyone else tired of Knowles taking the "high road" and trying to take the blame off the players.
Yeah. Burke got absolutely cooked multiple times tonight and those ass beatings he took ultimately resulted in multiple scores for Oregon.
Urban Meyer >Jim Harbaugh for ever and ever, Amen. 0
Denzel
BurkeBurnt Toast. Always felt he was a little overrated. Just because he started as a freshman out of need didn't make him BIA let alone prove he was at the level of the top guys over the last 10+ years. Two interceptions in his first three seasons? Against Rutgers & Youngstown State. Picking on one guy sucks, but the other team picking on him is worse...The problem starts with Knowles, he’s terrible
I think Larry Johnson needs a share of the blame, too. Just awful D-line play.
Where was the pressure? It was an embarrassing performance for a D-line that's full of high draft picks next year.
Yea, I hate to say it but it’s time for Larry Johnson to go. His group has consistently underperformed in these games.
It does feel like the game has passed him by. He's done nothing with anyone not drafted top 5.
I’ve been screaming about not having a pass rush since Chase Young. Looking back to 2019, we didn’t have a pass rush against wispy in the BTCG or against Clemson. I’m so sick and tired of LJ being above criticism. His guys haven’t done shit in a meaningful game in years.
ROLL BUCKEYES!
THIS. Burke getting burned while Matthews is on the sidelines
Burke played like Doris Burke. He was the number 1 target of Dillion Gabriel.
MediB is SO correct! Why not bench him after the 1st torching took place? WTF were they waiting for...???
"There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you."

A lot to figure out before round two in Indy. I’m looking forward to it though. It’s not often you get a chance at revenge in the same season.
We’ll need to beat PSU on the road if we want to get to Indy. Certainly not a given with how we looked last night.
That rug really tied the room together
Bro you know a-lot of our fans are soft asses who never played the game before . Those young men lost by 1 point and fans are talking down on them as if it was Vandy who whooped our asses. Oregon is the #2 team in the country. Go back to Columbus and figure this shit out. The 2014 team lost too and look at what happened. Stop with the blame game and address this shit like MEN… Lets reload that mf clip and focus on Nebraska… #GoBucks
Dope ppl do Dope things.. Instead of fighting and pointing fingers let’s help find a solution.. Be Great Not Good!!
Speed killed us against Oregon. There’s no one left in the schedule with that speed.
ROLL BUCKEYES!
Agreed. Can we please stop acting like we were just curb stomped by Maryland or Vanderbilt????
I'm squeamishly optimistic.
We're beating PSU
Indy? What makes you think we're going to Indy?
Penn State L
Indiana Potential L
ttun probably L
we lose 2 of those, we don't make Indy. I can easily see that with this defense.
We are not going to lose to Indiana or Um. But if we lose to Psu we are likely not going to Indy.
Not saying we see going to lose to them, but it is certainly not a given.
Indiana is gonna cause some serious problems for this defense.
I have a hard time seeing this team lose to Michigan. Their offense is just putrid.
Wait until you see how fast Oregon will look indoors on the turf at Indy with their star edge rusher back.
Big B

Was. No. Defense. Period.
klusewski
I’m no fan of Knowles, but was he supposed to come out of the booth and cover the WR’s himself? We lost this specific game because of Denzel Burke. Period.
That rug really tied the room together
Truer words may never have been spoken.
Robert M
The loss is on Day, he simply doesn't win big game's anymore...
GO BUCKS
He never has. I think Ryan Day is a pretty good person. But he’s proven he isn’t up to the job. Time to look elsewhere.
Ok.
Baaaaaalllerrrr
BuckeyeYankee
2022 UM: 530 yards, 45 points

How do we know this? I have not yet seen Vrabel coach at Ohio State.

Yep. I want NOTHING to do with Fickell or Vrable.
It doesn't appear te 20 million was well spent.
Bobcat66
Lot of money lost on the field out there tonight. Hope their nil deals are good enough after getting exposed. Defense lost this game.
Big B
FIRE JIM KNOWLES AND RYAN DAY!!!!! HARTLINE YOUR UP!!!
Id take Hartline HC, Kelly OC, Vrable DC
JFC
Total collapse on D. No pressure. If the talent is there then need new ideas.
I'm tired of losing to good teams.
If not now, when?
Even the announcers said the interior D-line is the best. JT & Sawyer have been major disappointments.
Collards
They're 5 bust.
Ramon Rupert
A lot to digest after that came.
OVB
Frustrating night watching this defense get housed. Can’t let Gabriel sit back comfortably picking apart the D. There was maybe 2-3 blitzes called?
Watching Burke get torched…. I guess all his trash talking didn’t pay off.
Captain Bucknut
Ctownbuck
This is a rerun of defensive performances against elite teams. Very disappointing. Based on this I'd say it will be a 3 loss season.
Goforthree
In big games Knowles happens.
We are in Cooper 2.0 cycle until Day is canned. He's the worst big game coach we've had in several decades.
What, are you trying to be an Irish R&B singer??
I’ve said this since day one Knowles is a fraud. The guy is all fake hype. He gets the lump against better competition. This defense has no foot speed and tackles like a bunch of candy asses. But you keep thinking that Knowles is the answer. When TTUN bullies, pushes and shoves his defense all day long AGAIN maybe they will finally fire his overrated ass and send him and his fake hype BS packing.
If you can’t make a fourth and one, you don't deserve to win.
TCUN are not beating this team, calm down.
Oh wait, we had it wrong..there are more certain things in life than death and taxes...
3) A Jim Knowles defense getting carved up like a Thanksgiving turkey in a big game against a team with a good offense.
Feel how you feel, I guess lol.
sfgoods
The defense gave up 50s yards of offense. Its not just about the win/loss. This team has no chance at NC with the defense playing this way.
In CFB to secure a bye you can lose 1 game at most. You can lose 2 at most to guarantee yourself a playoff spot. In the NFL, can you only afford 2 losses to make the playoff?
Birm said in his post game wrap up there is zero cohesion on defense and each unit coach just free lances.
A vet defense in year three of a scheme should not be this bad. Defense looked as bad as they did in year one under Knowles last night.
Stay gold, Ponyboy.
If this is true then this shows even more how day has 0 grip on what's going on with his team.
Knowles knows squat. BIG 12 DC what in the hell did you expect? That conf is like an arena league. Guru my ass. Never seen a HC or staff squander so much talent in my life.
CFW
Go Bucks!!!
It is like Day and Knowles are afraid of Johnson.
Stay gold, Ponyboy.
MW
How does the defense get much better this year.. totally changing schematics, vhanging personnel? just wondering how to do so? or just play bend dont break, hold teams to fgs...
We have heard this so many times from Knowles.
The fact it keeps happening is a concern.
Stay gold, Ponyboy.
Seems like we need a few new coaches on the defensive side, and get some players developed beyond their bodies...

Knowles is seriously overrated. Overpaid as well
CFW
To play poorly and have two goal line stands shows that we have the talent. However, the defense is constantly out of position and whiff on tackles that could change the game.
This is so frustrating to watch.
Another terrible coaching job by Knowles in a big game. Can we fire this overpaid professor? I really thought having this much experience coming back would make a difference but it obviously does not. Time to move on
I can remember when Urban’s team would take it to the next level. It seems like this team can’t do that.
When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's
Knowles is a goon. Talks like a politician
Bottom line....we can still beat Michigan, have a shot at the Big Ten title and a Natty....get back to work.
Bbc11
Football is still a game based on physicality. The LOS is where games are won and lost. OSU under day has not embraced that concept. Finesse and scheme are really important, but so is being able to punch someone in the mouth and in these games with quality teams it's OSU that repeatedly loses the LOS and gets punched. They're a soft bunch.
CH37
TBDBFIT
Kieren
Knowles and Larry Johnson need to go. The D-Line consistently is never able to get pressure on the Qb. We have not had any good pass rushers since the Bosa brothers and Chase young.
Under Knowles, our defense looks very vanilla. Lack of disguising coverages and very little blitzing. The defense is too reactionary vs being aggressive.
It is crazy how right all of us who wanted LJ gone were. I will not be accepting apologies from the losers who were wrong though.
Fire Day and replace him with who?
Obviously, day thought he was hiring Chuck Noll To run the defense. He was mistaken. He hired Chunk Knowles!!!

OSUAlumInAZ
This game turned out how I thought. Equal teams whose offenses could not be stopped by the others defense, I thought an over under should have been 70. And that the last to team to score would win.
When Oregon and Ohio State meet in the Big Ten Title game Oregon has to make the long trip. Thus far 90% of Big Ten teams that make the long trip loses. Ohio State wins the Big Ten Title rather easily
Knowles Is being kind and what most coaches do, by taking the blame instead of letting his players take it
2 things that stood out to me.
CH37
What was and is our 3rd down conversion rate on offense and defense , Becuase that will tell the story of good line play.

Playing Big 12 Defense in the Big 10. I wonder why that didn’t work last year and now this year????
Playing Big 12 Defense in the Big 10. I wonder why that didn’t work last year and now this year????
CBus love
You might add NO blitzes there Jimbo.........That defense couldn't stop a granny in a wheelchair......

This game proved the old saying “the most important position in football is the quarterback.”
The will to win is not as important as the will to prepare to win. -- Woody Hayes
I think Senator Tressel would like a word.
Day and Knowles should be on the hot seat.
Concerning the headline .... THIS 1000%
Forced by work to live in the mitten
Any truth the Knowles and LJ not seeing eye to eye on Dline assignments. Have heard several times Day has given favor to LJ due to being the elder statesmen and he wants his Dline going 1 on 1 to get pressure, I see zero twists or stunts with this Dline. I know Burke played like a turd, but at some point you have to put some of this on the D line play not making the qb uncomfortable, that dude was back there texting his buddies "watch this".
