Not really excited about Parrish, more so because I prefer Townsend and Parrish is not a great shooter from 2(39%) or 3(29%), plus we have his clone in Mahaffey.
You need to be humble or you will get humbled. - Jocko Willink
I get not being all that excited for Parrish. But Micah has made 152 more three pointers in his career than Evan, at a 12% better clip. Also shoots 16% better at the line for his career.
Staff have to be hoping that Parrish shoots closer to his career average from 3 before last season (35%).
That said, if Mahaffey shot closer to 30% from 3 this past season on good volume, maybe our fanbase would have more positive feelings about him. Cuz he wasn't anywhere near that (11.8%) even in small volume.
I think a guy like Parrish will flourish in Dieblers style/system of offense. Get the rebound get out and push the ball up the floor. Hit a trailing Bradshaw or Okpara for an alley oop or pullup drain a 3. Given Dutchers defensive oriented style, a methodical half court offensive style of play, 3 point percentages and made 3's can be misleading. Having a couple guys that can pull up and drain a 3 might actually be better than relying on one guy to do this. Middleton showed flashes of this as a freshman. With Parrish you are replacing Middleton with a seasoned cat whose 3 point numbers will more likely resemble two years ago as opposed to last year.
And for all the slamming of Mahaffeys offensive game as a senior ar Archbishop Moeller he had a field goal percentage of .645 for the year, made 6 of 11 3's for a .545 percentage. He is not bereft of offensive capabilities.
Parrish is not a great shooter from 2(39%) or 3(29%)
Don't think that's accurate. Per Sports Ref, last season Micah shot 49.7% on 2-point field goals (pretty darn good) and 29% on treys. The 39% includes all field goals (both twos and threes).

Spot on Polar. Watched a lot of Oakland in the day & Parrish is nowhere close to Townsend. Neither Parrish nor Mahaffey bring much to the table. They resemble most of the transfers brought in the last several seasons - MEH. Was thinking we turned the corner after the 1st two transfers.
Exactly, but you finish 13th in the league last year and 10th this year, what do you expect to get?? And just about anyone with a pulse get these fans on this site hopeful.
Lots to like about Parrish, as it seems he moves well, can find his own shot or shoot treys off a screen, apparently defends well, rebounds a bit, assists, etc.
But I'm curious about the photo in OSU uniform in his tweet. He's wearing a #3 Buckeye jersey — the same number he wore at SDSU. But Taison Chatman wore that number for OSU this past season.
Our honor defend, we'll fight to the end !
"it's not magic, it's fundamentals" that lead to Ohio State's success. - Ryan Day
I like Parrish. He brings a lot of positive attributes to the table and comes from a winning program. He knows more about advancing in the Dance than the rest of our roster (which actually know nothing about advancing in the Dance, ha).
Am I still very much concerned about our shooting next season? Um, yes.
@Nomatta, I "like" him. But I like Evan Mahaffey too. They are solid glue guys, but I don't know that we need both of them. When we say they bring a lot of positive attributes - it always feels like we're self-rationalizing to make up for their lack of actual talent.
@Nomatta, I agree - I'd take Parrish over Evan, but I meant more so as far as roster construction. If Evan is coming off the bench for Micah, I'm not encouraged by that. But in reverse, if Evan starts over Micah - what does that say about Micah then? Not encouraged by that either. I'd rather just have one of them and hope we can upgrade more in the portal.
@Michbux, settle down bud. You’re clearly not understanding. When I said I “like” both players I was being sarcastic and the whole point was conveying neither one of them are talented enough, but us fans say we “like” them to try and convince ourselves they are a better inclusion on the team than they really are.
My whole analogy was neither are good options to start or be each others back up. Both would be okay as very last options off the bench. Neither are what we need in trying to level up this program.
9.3 ppg & tournament experience sounds underrated to me. I've bought so many Onit trading cards, I was just thinking I'm funding half the NIL operations before seeing this.
Not excited by this, below are our additions and losses by transfer portal player rankings. Bowen doesn't count, and we went backward on Gayle on Scotty. Of course, rankings aren't everything, but I'm not sold that Meechie is an upgrade despite Roddy's turnovers. Plus, Roddy had a hurt wrist much of the season which I'd think played a good role in this hectic play at times.
Would feel better about this if Evan Mahaffey transferred out, as well as Eltzer and/or Parks to create some more room. We have a respectable $4M designated for NIL. Seems to not be enough and/or players are not bullish on OSU as a legit basketball program yet. Or, Diebs is not quite the recruiter we thought.
Just think next year we are going to have 3 guys from rural nw OH who have played against smaller white slow guys and now are expected to play Big 10 ball.
Not saying your point is completely invalid, but Aaron Craft and Jon Diebler were from smaller high schools.
"It is easy to grin, when your ship comes in and you know you got the stock market beat. But a man worthwhile is a man who smiles, when his shorts are too tight in the seat." -Judge Smails
And again, not saying your point is invalid, but Alan Hornyak and Luke Witte might disagree with your stereotype. Omg, I am so old, my head is exploding!
Alan Hornyak was from my area and played for Bellaire St. Johns....He once scored 86 points in one game and lost 103-99 in OT......The rest of his team scored 13 points TOTAL.........
From reading the threads on the basketball transfer portal it seemed like the Ohio State fans who follow closely had Parrish ranked a distant third behind Townsend and Anderson. Perhaps Townsend finishes off the class for the Buckeyes. I wonder if, after retaining the current roster, NIL money was mostly spent and we couldn't compete with other schools for some of the other top players? Either way, have to trust the coaches and hope that all goes well next season.
I like him quite a bit, but I definitely seem to be in the minority.
Also, the other schools in close contact with Parrish were USC, Michigan, Clemson, Creighton, and Xavier. Pretty solid list.
And Dusty May might be taking Roddy from us, but maybe he was envisioning a Micah Parrish-Trey Townsend reunion (played 2 years together at Oakland) in Ann Arbor, and maybe that will happen in Columbus instead.
Numbers aren't that great, but a fresh start and a new system could be good for him. This is where we find out how good Diebler is!!! Personally, I am still skeptical about him but I hope he turns out to be the right hire!!
The only up grade I have seen is Bradshaw. Meechie and Roddy is close to a wash, Roddy a better penetrater, Meechie a better outside shooter, maybe. Parrish is just a ordinary backup, adds no big rebounding presence, low volume shooter. We needed rebounding help and good downtown shooting. Parrish does neither of these things well. Will be a floor filler backup. Closet match to Etzler than Mahaffey, unless he can really bring the D and the several times I watched him play, I did not see that.
I’ll admit, do not know much about Parrish but I trust that Coach D and his staff knows exactly what they want from this guy and they will put him into positions to help the program. Go Bucks!!
Thing about mahaffey is just because he is not a scorer the belief is he’s a defender. While he’s not bad he’s no good defender. He just was a hell of a lot better than some of the worst defenders they had on that team in bruce and Roddy. He still gave up penetration a lot just less than they did. Hell a broom stick out in the court would just about tie those two.
Parrish is from River Rouge H.S. In Michigan. That’s the same high school as Brent Darby, a solid, three-year starter who lettered with the Ohio State men's basketball team from 2000-03. Sadly, he passed away in 2011.
I'm not excited about him on paper, but I'm sure coach Diebler has watched a lot of film and can see the intangibles, so I have to trust his evaluations. On paper he does seem like an upgrade over Mehaffey, but if stats were the end for every player all Mehaffey would not play. I'm excited for next year and can't wait to see the team Diebler is building. I think things are going to get fast and intense on the court.
We need another Brandon Fuss-Cheatham and we're winning it all! My Lord he was something special ... LMAO! 794 pts in his career!! Don't know what made me think of that but damn! Turr-ible!
Not super exciting but he's a solid guy in the rotation. Good defender which doesn't always shot in the box score. He's an upgrade over Evan who will probably need to see a minutes reduction. Would like to add a 3 point shooter still
I don't follow the portal closely enough to know if this is good or not so good. However I am optimistic that if Diebler went after him, he sees some value and a fit on the team. I'm reminded of both Bonner and Battle under Diebler.
Bonner was terrible all year but improved drastically once Diebler became coach.
Battle became a more complete player once Diebler became coach. Under Holtman, Battles job was to not get closer than the 3 point line and wait for a shot. Under Diebler, he started driving to the basket which helped open up more 3 attempts.
I also think that Gayle is not a huge loss. Diebler started limiting his minutes at the end of games in crucial times. Gayle was great a driving crazily into the lane and on occasion made a great shot - but usually lost the ball, fell down, or made a bad pass. He may be highly rated because he is athletic, But I think he is easily replaceable.
This is an excellent pickup. Parsons started at Oakland under Greg Kampe and then transferred to San Diego state to play for Brian Dutcher. This is a very experienced role player. He has played in many significant games in his career to include final fours, sweet 16 (this season) and of course the title game 2 years ago. Folks need to remember that Jamison Battle level portal pickups are not the norm, but we don’t truly know well any particular kid will gel within our system and what Diebler is looking to do. I like this. This roster in my opinion is coming together beautifully. If we could get Trey Townsend to get the last scholarship, we could be crazy good next season.
Not excited about this pickup. Seems like a former clown coach type of player but have to trust Diebler on this. Hopeful for a bigger boom on next addition.
Not sure where former “clown coach” fits here unless you are referring to Holtmann. Brian Dutcher and Greg Kampe are both experienced coaches and both lead good programs. You don’t have to be excited but you cannot argue with the programs and their overall success where this kid has played ball in the past. Fact is, you and I don’t know how well he will fit our system. But I will tell you, experience matters and parsons has it
What I like about it is that Diebler seems to have a better idea/ feel for constructing a roster than Holtmann. I say that base on hopefully the Buckeyes add Townsend or Anderson……
All the experts here would most likely not have offered Michael Jordan a scholarship out of HS, but with time and EXPERIENCE he turned out OK. How many lanky bigs have you seen at Wisconsin in just the last 10 years start out looking terrible and by their senior year were good players? Enough to know that players can get better every year IMHO.

Loooove it. Transfers from winning cultures/winning teams. Jake Thad Diebler. I can dig it.
Parrish had 15 points and 5 rebounds when SDSU beat us in the Maui Invitational in 22-23. I think he'll really help our defense. Long athletic wing.
Not the splashy portal get but a veteran contributor from a successful program that may help us land Townsend. Good add, keep doing your thing Jake!
Nice! Seems to be the last huge need filled!

Maybe a 3-point shooting competition could resolve who wears #3. : )
