We would need 3 losses most likely for that if we don’t win out we are going into the playoffs likely 10-2 lose at #1-2 Oregon most likely and lose at probably top 5 Penn state I doubt we miss out and personally I think we beat Penn state and hopefully get our rematch in Indy which I believe we can win with some adjustments and what we learned the first time we played Oregon
A loss in State College would cost us a chance at the Big Ten championship, but I think a 3rd loss is needed to prevent a playoff berth. Just beat the Nittany Lions.
I agree that there is SEC bias and 8-game conf sched is weak. But I think the point PF is making is that our non-conf games don’t give us any margin like maybe in past years. So losing another game or two is dicey. He says basically:
OSU win out, obviously in
OSU win out but lose B10, almost def in
OSU lose once more and no go to Indy, maybe in, probably
This also allows the SEC to be unencumbered by another conference loss and to avoid the kind of cannibilization that the other "power conferences" go through every year.
Seriously you are literally guaranteeing that half your conference has one extra loss by playing this game. It prob won't affect Bama and Texas, but those 3 and 4 loss teams going to 4 and 5 losses matters a ton when the SEC already gets the benefit of the doubt.
If you take everything I’ve accomplished in my life and condense it down to one day, it looks decent!
SEC and ACC realized awhile ago that voters are stupid and don't really care about schedules, just about number of losses. No sense in giving half your conference a guaranteed extra loss. So the SEC gets more of their mid teams sneaking into the back half of the top 25, which also makes their best teams look better.
Also, OSU got absolutely screwed with their Big Ten schedule. They play almost all of the best teams in the conference.
He doesn’t always hold my favorite opinions, and sometimes some of my least favorite. But I did email him one time, and he wrote back. So for me a national sportswriter who answers a fan is alright in my book, even if I disagree with his point. The reply was semi snarky, but so was the email that I wrote to him.
Given the reaction to the Oregon loss, if what you're describing happens, Buckeye nation will lose any shred of sanity left and this site's servers won't be able to handle the verbal onslaught of anger, depression, grief and etc.
When is the last time we were outside the top 12? We arent missing the playoff unless we lose more than 2 games. And I don't think we are losing another game.
Dai - I agree 100%, but I do think the committee will change the way they think about their rankings now that they know 5-12 actually matter.
From 2014-2023 there were a lot of 5-12 that I don’t think the committee would have ranked that way if something actually mattered with those rankings.
Win the games and that's what matters. A win is a win. I personally would like to see a 4 team SEC/B1G agreement during future regular season and the discussion could be settled (But probably not then either). I am a Bucs fan, but I read a post on here yesterday that shows our performance against the top 5 teams and the top 10 teams which we generally play near the end of the season. Our record is abysmal (1-7 against top 5: 7-7 against top 10) for a top rated team and the stats were over several years so there was no cherry picking. What is real is that the season record will get you into the Playoffs. In the last 5 seasons (then only 4 team made the playoffs) the SEC has won the National Championship 4 time by 3 different teams. I really don't care who they play during the season, all I know is that they win at the end of the season against the BEST teams and it is not centrally located to Alabama although they have won a lot in the last 15 years. So let's just win our games and don't worry about other team's schedules! We can't control other team's schedule, but we are in total control of our wins. So win it and there will be no problems. As a side note, don't look at how easy some team's early season schedule is, look at the rankings of the teams they beat. That's how you get into the playoffs and even have a chance at the National Championship. We haven't been able to get there in the last few years and I am not even going to mention what happened in 2020 when we did get there. So JUST WIN THE GAMES and we will be fine. This kind of comparison (as you can tell bothers me because it is sour grapes as far as I am concerned!) Perhaps I am the only one that remembers the outcomes of the the B1G/SEC outcomes on January 1 last season. The conference had a big 0. Seems as if we should be able win ONE game and I am not counting the Natty, because that even had to go to overtime and the Best SEC team (GA) was not even in the playoffs! I am really ticked off with excuses!! JUST WIN THE GAMES!
That is correct. The post is about a team's 3 worst opponents. With Bama only playing 8 conference games, Wisky was the best of their 4 non-conference games.
If we go 10-2 we’d have wins over Iowa Nebraska Indiana Michigan those teams most likely all end up with 8+ wins Michigan could get 7 but for this excercise we’ll say 8. Then you mix in 2 of Marshall wmu and northwestern are bowl teams and we would have 2 losses on the road to 2 top 3 teams and just for shits and grins say we lose by 3 to Penn st we’d have lost by a combined 4 points. Ya there is no way in hell a 10-2 Ohio state is getting left out. Last year there would have been 3 10-2 teams making the playoff including Penn st
Yo, I was as disappointed as anyone with the result, and the defense, against Oregon. I totally understand the sentiment. But Georgia eked out a 1 point win against Kentucky. Then got beaten by Alabama who subsequently got thoroughly outplayed by Vanderbilt.
We have the most first world problems on the planet.
I tend to agree that we'll be fine for getting into the playoff with two losses, but where Forde has a point is the committee is going to look at not only who you lost to, but who you beat. It reminds me of the way fans of.unsuccessful March Madness teams like to argue, "But look at how good all the teams that beat us are!" You'd much rather be calling attention to big wins.

I was thinking about our weak out of conference schedule as well, but not in the context of making the playoffs. Playing a weak out of conference schedule I think doesn’t prepare a team to play tougher opponents and also gives the team a false sense of confidence. Also kind of think it’s a disservice to fans to play a host of cupcakes.

In my personal opinion, the selection committee should take OOC schedules into consideration, but they don’t. They only look at SOS as a whole, and Ohio State is doing quite fine there.

Silly OP thinks this analysis means anything to anyone. The SEC is just better so their non-conference schedules don't matter.
To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.
Really worried that the Committee will look at our Non Conference Schedule and not give us a spot in the CFP if we happen to not win the Conference.

Ohio State will make the CFP field unless they lose 3 games.

LMFAO...come on dude.
That will matter AS LONG as they simultaneously COMPLETELY IGNORE THE FACT THAT OSU HAD TO PLAY TWO TOP FOUR TEAMS ON THE ROAD.

Yeah; we’d need 3 losses to be out. Meaning we lose to Penn State and one of Nebraska/UM/Indiana. If that happens we deserve to be left out.

We gotta make the top 9 to guarantee a spot.

I love the game!
I’m pretty sure Bama played Wisconsin in Camp Randall.

They won't get left out, but a road game at Georgia? Alabama? LSU?
Anything short of a home playoff game (which might not happen if Ohio State loses to Penn State) would not be a good spot for Ohio State.

10-2 Ohio State is a lock for the playoffs.
If we don't get in the 12 team Playoff with the roster we have this season, I'd be OK with firing everybody. I'm almost there now.

Perhaps those MAC teams along with MSU and Iowa made everyone think the defense was better than it is.
