Just happy to watch my team in the playoffs again. Favorite time of the year. Its been since 2015 and after last years' 100 loss season, this year feels almost like they are ahead of schedule. Playing with house money. The Orioles are the favorite but if the offense can get it going and if BWJ can get hot again, we are in for a fun series.
Ohio State is the state school. The borders of fandom align almost perfectly with the state boundaries:
But when it comes to professional sports, it is typically the proximity to the city that associates with fandom. In this case that means the Reds in SW Ohio, Cleveland in NE Ohio, the Tigers are the favorite in NW Ohio (Toledo Mud Hens are the triple A team for Detroit as well), and even the Pirates stake a claim as the favorite team in select areas of SE Ohio:
I'm also a Buckeyes & Tigers fan. We are also discerning people who understand that the Tigers are fine representatives of SE Michigan (and NW Ohio) but Harbaugh & Co. are lowlifes who are an embarrassment.
Wouldn't mind seeing either Ohtani or Harper getting their first WS and if we get a viral Castellanos HR moment at any point that might be my tipping point to root for Philly outside of the Guardians.
Best part of Royals v Guards is the office where I work will give us the afternoon out of the office (work from wherever essentially) for playoff baseball. So give me every afternoon game there is.
The Yankees caught a break with KC holding the tie breaker over Detroit. The Tigers pitching staff would have been a problem for the Yankees in the short series. The Royals staff might be a problem for them. If the Royals get past Cole Saturday, the Yankees could be in trouble. It's all about KC's offense and working past Soto and Judge each time thru the lineup.
Playoffs have been amazing. Great games. Padres look dangerous. Good pitching w Dervish, King and Cease and then the bullpen. If Musgrove can make it back they have to be favorites.
Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, A-Rod, Jason Giambi, Manny Ramirez, Albert Belle, Roger Clemons, George Brett, Whitey Ford, and the 1951 Giants all were identified as cheating as well.
If you expect any baseball fan whose team roster or management has ever included a person who has been caught cheating to renounce their allegiances then you’re asking a lot. Hell, Hinch’s misgivings weren’t even associated with the Tigers!
Give up 40 years of allegiance because of the hire of Hinch? No way. Go Tigs!
There's no super team out there, but I had the Phillies as the most complete team and likely favorites, so seeing them go out so meekly was a surprise.
The Guardians' recent history -- and by recent I mean "since 1997" -- suggests that they can't win a must-win postseason game. But they at least have the starting pitching advantage for Game 4
I didn't want San Diego to win so I'm ok with a Dodgers win and I sure don't want the Mets to advance so it looks like I'm stuck with LA to the finals.
I would rather Cleveland win tomorrow but I'm ok with Detroit winning, I just want either one to beat the Yankees.
What a strange use of the BP. Why was Boyd pulled so early? Who is Walter and why his use in a big game. All stars discussing the game on TBS had a lot of Q about BP use.
Glad the Guardians got past the Tigers but they are punching way up vs NY. I think the Skankees win the ALCS 4-2. I’m hoping the Mets beat the Dodgers but they got steamrolled in game one. If I had to choose who I want to see win the series this year I’d go
(1) CLE of course
(2) Mets because they aren’t the Skankees
(3) Los Angeles
(4) Fuck the Skankees
When telling the truth becomes a revolutionary concept, it’s wise to join the revolution
I don’t know, the history of Baseball’s golden era is nostalgic and NYY vs NYM draws reminisce to those great 1950s battles between the Giants, Dodgers, and Yankees. (Cleveland was damn good in that era too!) Unfortunately the Mets have always felt like a sideshow and IMO have failed to live up to EITHER the legacy of the Brooklyn Dodgers or the NY Giants let alone a replacement for both.
So as a fan of none of the remaining teams, I’d prefer:
1. Yankees - Dodgers. I prefer small market success typically but the appeal of this old rivalry and storied franchises is what baseball needs. So much star power across those two teams.
2. Subway Series - to the above point, it’s a cheapened version of the namesake from 75+ years ago but the rivalry still garners national attention.
3. Indians - Dodgers - two classic franchises!
4. Indians - Mets
Regardless, any of these matchups will be far better than Rangers - Diamondbacks or past WS that have involved a team like the Rays and their handful of fans.
I 100% agree MLB desperately needs a cap and a floor. No question at all.
That said, everyone outside of N. Ohio and whatever districts of NYC some Mets fans inhabit wants to see Shohei and the Dodgers vs Judge and the Yankees.
Dodgers up 7-0 in NLCS Game 3 after Ohtani hits a monster three-run homer in the top of the eighth. Can't see if Mets fans are heading for the exits but I know I would be.
Why would baseball fans yawn at the most storied AL franchise meeting the most storied NL franchise for the first time in like 50 years? Yankees - Dodgers is the most iconic WS matchup historically. That’s just the history. Then add on the fact that these two lineups are absolutely loaded! Ratings will blow recent years out of the water.
I don’t think baseball fans outside of N Ohio are desperately hoping for an Indians - Mets WS.
You couldn’t be more off. First, the Yankees are the first, second, or third most popular team in any given state aside from California.
Second, Ohtani draws a packed house wherever he goes. Judge draws a lot of attention as well.
Third, most baseball purists love a traditional, old-time rivalry.
My take is that you likely hate the Yankees and/or Dodgers for their success and/or for their spending and that’s likely clouding your perspective vs reality.
My rooting order is Guards, Dodgers, Yankees, Mets. I think it's becoming increasingly clear the Dodgers are the best team left and will win the whole thing. Their offense can score in bursts, is mostly reliable, and they have an elite bullpen with some quality starters. I think they get it done.
Yankees have been beloved by the media all year, but are largely a 3/4 man outfit. Pitching isn't as great as people say I don't think. Mets, come on. They are a mediocre team with a MVP candidate that benefits from BABIP luck and one-run games. They shouldn't have beaten Milwaukee let alone the Dodgers. I hope that the Cleveland can make it a series, but it appears their offense is disappearing at the worst possible time.

Who are you guys rooting for?

Cleveland.
Let's Go Bucks
Pretty much anyone except Cleveland or Milwaukee. Phils and Yanks would be my wish for the WS.
The next 2-3 days are the most epic of the year for baseball. I took leave just to sit a watch 12+ hours of baseball lol.

Orioles play the Royals with the winner getting the Yankees
Astros play the Tigers with the winner getting the Guardians
Padres play the Braves with the winner getting the Dodgers
Brewers play the Mets with the winner getting the Phillies
Royals win game one 1-0
Tigers win game one 3-1
Padres win game one 4-0
Mets win game one 8-4
Eat ‘em up Tigers!

My predictions for winners of WC round: Orioles, Tigers, Padres, and Brewers.

LOVE playoff Baseball. GO TRIBE ! Hope we have enough offense to win 11 !
What a day for the Tigers!
10 years gone and the bullpen rattles still exist but they held on. Go get ‘em tomorrow!
Padres, LFG

Would be cool to see an all ALC and ALE matchup in the divisional round then seeing the Guards and Yankees go at it in the ALCS.
Shohei is so good I hope the Dodgers make it to the World Series.

ALDS is Ohio vs Michigan
I am sure everyone here will root accordingly

Hey man, feel free to throw your lot in with the Harbaugh worshippers if you want.
I am with BeatMeechigan as a NW Ohioan. Buckeyes + Tigers fans do exist, we are nice people, and that does not make us Harbaugh worshippers.
Buckeyes+Guardians+Lions fans exist also. Also a NW Ohioan.
I'm also a Buckeyes & Tigers fan. We are also discerning people who understand that the Tigers are fine representatives of SE Michigan (and NW Ohio) but Harbaugh & Co. are lowlifes who are an embarrassment.

Bye bye Baltimore, Royals win 2-1 to sweep the series.
Good for KC and Detroit.

happy for S, and fuck the Braves, that said, Atlanta was set up to fail, not they they didn't put themselves into that situation, but still.

I loathe the Dodgers, but I love Ohtani, so that sucks
Probably leaning into the Phils, because they have Harper, Schwarber, and Castellanos

why does this thread have downvotes? are we that big of pieces of shit? or do people just hate me that much personally?

I just gave an upvote to even the count.
Actually, I just went through and gave all participants an upvote.
Royals have made the playoffs 3 times in the last 39 seasons, and advanced in 7 of the 8 playoff rounds they’ve played in.
To add, since 94 they’ve had 4 seasons above .500.
Please beat the Yankees. Knock out the two biggest thorns in recent Cleveland playoff baseball before we set to face them, that would be nice.
Now i become Boob Salsa, grifter of men.
Royals Guardians would be a hilarious ALCS
If the NLCS was Dogers-Phillies, the NLCS would be prime time every night and the alcs might get relegated to Disney +

Hehe, eff Milwaukee.
Incredible game, but you got to feel bad for the Brewers.
Nah.
I am sorry that my glass of Knob Creek is empty. Does that count?
I’ll admit I was a purist who hated to see the MLB playoffs expanded.
This week has been outstanding! It almost feels like March Madness for a baseball fan with 4 games a day.
And the top two teams in each league remain protected.
Was rooting for the Brewers, and still hate the Mets. But that whole crap with Winker was ridonk, they deserve to lose after that bullshit.

Excellent games yesterday. MLB (and TV execs) has to be happy seeing these series tied right now.
Things not looking good for the Phillies, their pitching doesn't seem up to par.
Padres crowd tonight was unreal, they really brought it. Hungry fanbase with no other major sports teams left in the city. Kudos
Been that way I a while. A very passionate fanbase. On of the best stadiums in the US to catch a game regardless of sport.
I told my son that the Dodgers should want to play any other team than the Padres, they just can't seem to beat them.
I think Roberts reacted way to slowly to change pitchers in the second.
Playoffs have been amazing. Great games. Padres look dangerous. Good pitching w Dervish, King and Cease and then the bullpen. If Musgrove can make it back they have to be favorites.
Wonder if there will be any shenanigans with the potential Ohtani v Judge golden goose WS almost cooked?

Tigs keep grinding!
My gut tells me Cleveland bounces back tomorrow with some offense then we see a nail-biter in Game 5.
Regardless, this Buckeye and Tiger fan is damn proud of what this young team is doing.
how does a Buckeye fan that hates Michigan and Harbaugh root for AJ Hinch?
Die Living // PT*42
Hinch is from Iowa. I’m not aware of any connection of his to U of M or Harbaugh.

I can think of nothing worse than an all NY World Series.
I don’t know, the history of Baseball’s golden era is nostalgic and NYY vs NYM draws reminisce to those great 1950s battles between the Giants, Dodgers, and Yankees. Yankees-Dodgers is 100% what is wrong with MLB
MLB League Championship Series Payrolls:
Mets: $350.3 million
Dodgers: $339.8 million
Yankees: $314.7 million
Guardians: $140.3 million
Exactly my point chief. MLB needs a cap (and a floor). And with the Dodgers you need to add in that they are deferring a shit ton of money for Shohei.
And I don't know where you are getting your figures from but there is no way in hell Cleveland's payroll is that high.
I 100% agree MLB desperately needs a cap and a floor. No question at all.
That said, everyone outside of N. Ohio and whatever districts of NYC some Mets fans inhabit wants to see Shohei and the Dodgers vs Judge and the Yankees.

are we going to see a subway series circa y2k?
Die Living // PT*42
Hope not.
I think we're going to see a Subway Series circa early-to-mid 1950s
I'd prefer Yanks-Dodgers, but Yanks-Mets would be alright too.
I would rather have Cleveland-Mets with Cleveland taking it all.
If this ends up being NY vs. Dodgers, 90 percent of the country will yawn and change the channel.
If this ends up being a Subway Series, 99 percent of the country will yawn and change the channel.
Bingo

I don’t think baseball fans outside of N Ohio are desperately hoping for an Indians - Mets WS.
Fans outside of NY or LA don't like or care about those teams, and they won't see any reason to casually look in.
Now...if there was an upstart taking on a Goliath, then there would probably be more interest.
