You guys are in for a rude awakening if you think Zen did "good" against Oregon.
OL is a problem. Trust me you will notice it fairly soon. When Simmons went down, Zen's blocking was awful. He has been in the program for 4 years. The offensive line is clearly poorly coached. The RG play was also awful. RT play has also been average to bad.
It has been time for LJ to move on. I imagine LJ and Frye are gone at the end of the year.
I hate to break it to you, but strength and conditioning is lacking at a lot of places. The field doesn't exactly attract the most cerebral individuals. A lot of places under-emphasize exercises that good for injury prevention, while overemphasizing other exercises too much (e.g., bench press). Also, programs use machine-based weights too much when the free-weight variation is much better.
It can only be LJ and other previous coordinators. There is no other common denominator here besides LJ unless Austin is implicating Day as also being responsible for the defensive woes. If I recall, Day insisted on running a single-high scheme prior to Knowles arriving. That may be why Austin is trying to be vague.
Just hope Howard doesn't get injured because the left tackle play after Simmons went out is not going to cut it at all.
Day pretty much has this year to show whether he will be retained over the long-term. Even if he comes back next year after a hypothetical disappointing year this year, next year's team will be a rebuilding year: losing a lot of talent after this year, and there is little depth and talent on the offensive line. One way or another, you will get your answer by the end of this year.
Win it all with Michalski at LT? He is worse than Fryar at pass protection. Howard is going to be running for his life.
They come down to one play because of the multiple gaffs that precede the last play. Multiple false starts, inexplicable jumbled snaps, poor coaching, poor special team play. You name it. That is the Ryan Day era. The same old mistakes. Offensive line play is going to get worse with the injury to Simmons. Some of the fans are in for a rude awakening when we play a team with good defensive ends. Michalski is not a good pass blocker. When it is all said and done, it will be Day's poor decision making with regards to staff changes that will result in him being let go. How many good assistant coaches has he hired? I can only think of three: Kelly, Jeff Hafley, and maybe Tim Walton.
Have to agree. That rarely gets called.
This elementary defense is what is holding us back. You want to simplify it?
Day has shot himself in the foot by refusing to hire a competent offensive coordinator until this year. He also has hired poorly. We have the highest paid offensive line coach, but he can't recruit to save his life. As much as Knowles has disappointed me, there clearly is some disconnect with the defensive coaching staff. LJ should not have been retained.
Simplify a defense with a veteran-laden team? What? Four years into Knowles' tenure and we are still playing spot zone coverage, something that virtually every other program has moved away from.
Because Day can't consistently win big games. Isn't that the only thing that matters in the grand scheme of things. Beating up on the little sisters of the poor doesn't mean anything.
Are we one of the only top 10 teams that still does spot zone coverage instead of matching? I would really like to know.
I stayed at a Holliday Inn last night.
Linebackers continue to disappoint. Poor tackling and poor coverage. They are late to fill holes. On one play, there were 5 blockers against 6 defenders in the box; the play went for about 6 yards. Just anemic defending at times.
My eyes are burning just reading through this thread.
That's not true. Cardiovascular exercise is superior to weight training for weight loss.
Evidence statement: Resistance training will not promote clinically significant weight loss. Evidence category A.
