Knowles usually does pretty well against lesser opponents when he’s got the talent gap. He will stuff the stat sheet in these games. The D usually doesn’t perform well when the talent is close to equal. He’s a liability as a recruiter as well and over priced. I would just like to move on.

Day keeps getting beat against Mich and all it does is makes it better for him. Everyone freaks out and gives him more money and resources. He’s got an open checkbook for himself, coaches, players, staff etc. There are others who could do just as good if not better. There is a lot of good coaches, leaders out there.
0 for 9 on goals, 0 for 4 on last top 5 matchups, 0 for 3 for Mich games, the advantage should occasionally break our way. Pay me 10 million, I guarantee no worse. There needs to be accountability, not always just more money/resources.
Just one example. Osu has 14, 5 star recruits. The 17 other big 10 schools combined have a total of 15. So Osu has 14, the other 17 average less then 1 per team. No other big 10 school comes close on player recruits, and now if they need to plug a hole, they get the best portal, because the nil money is flowing. Day also has the money to get about any coach he wants. Day was born on third, and so far, has ran back to second.
Ryan Days goals are to beat Mich, win the big 10, and win the NC. In the last 3 years, he’s 0-9 on his goals. For the last 3 years he’s had more talent, resources, money for coaches, now players etc. then any other big 10 program, most by a large margin. He’s now lost his last 4 top 5 matchups, but just keeps getting raises. The criticism is justified, time to get it done, or move on from him.
Yes talent advantage. OSU recruiting ranking 2020-2023, 5, 2, 4, 4. Mich recruiting ranking 2020-2023 10, 13, 9, 17. Total 5 stars OSU 13, Mich 2. Mich is doing some much more with less, that’s coaching. Two of the last 3 loses to Mich were not even close. Mich would have not won the title if OSU coaches were coaching them.
2022 was a disaster, you do know that Knowles was coach that year. He took chances all year and mostly got away with it because he had superior talent. As soon as the talent became a little close his scheme fell apart. In the 2023 game he still has the talent advantage, goes conservative in the second half, determined not to give up a big play, but gives up long time consuming drives. There are times you need have to bring the heat. Bottom line, at some point you gotta get a stop, if you can’t do that in two years with the talent you have, I’m not impressed. You are what your record says you are, he’s 0-2.
Knowles hasn’t stopped a Mich drive in the second half in 2 years. You get 2 million for that? At least he can recruit, oh wait, no he can’t.
Pretty simple, play a 4-3 defense. Three linebackers. Simon in the middle, Hicks, and Styles on the edges. Both can run like safeties so overall speed will need be an issue even against spread offenses. Pick your two best corners and safeties and role.
It’s a meaningless game.
Two years ago Brian Hartline had never coached Wide Recivers, today he is regarded as the best wide reciever coach in college. You can judge by any standard, develop, recruiting, draft pics, whatever. Jim Knowles is the line backers coach, Larinitus is just assist, not full time coach. Tommy E just won big 10 linebacker of the year. None of your points are valid.
I would assume Days conservative approach is somewhat driven by the fact the offensive line doesn’t have the push in short yardage. This has been evident all year, even when playing teams like Youngstown when they should have a huge talent advantage. Mich on the other had, has confidence in short yardage, so it’s easier to make the call to go for it, as evident in 3 converted 4th down attempts. The offensive line is not going to get fixed anytime soon, it’s likely to get worse unless their are some drastic changes and portal help.
I didn’t see much of the Maryland game, but Maryland only had 270 total yards of offense. I think only 15 yards rushing once they took some of the sack yardage away. Doesn’t sound like a terrible defensive performance. Hope we can control the line against Mich, just not sure that will happen.
If Tommy was ready to go he should have played him. You don’t take possible his last home game away. If your not going to play your starters then sit all 22 of them not just one.
I think I would wait a couple of more games just to make sure.
Why hasn’t he seen the field before?
Not dominated you, but the football team. Beat us by 20 in our own house. After 2 straight losses I don’t think any player should be talking trash. Play hard and fair but respect your opponent. Do you really think the other team is going to get scared of a few words? When people talked trash to me it only made me play harder. This is poor coaching.
Mich just dominated you the last 2 years with less talent and you want to start chirping?
Ohio State played against so pretty bad offensive teams last year that helped with the defensive rankings. 7 teams were ranked 90 or worse in total offense. They only played 3 teams in the top 50, Penn State (34), Mich (24), and Georgia (5). The defense did not fair so well when playing decent competition. It’s easy to do good when you have a talent advantage over your competition, you find out what you’re made of when talent is more even. Defense should have done better.
Urban laid an egg when he keep starting JT over Burrow & Haskins. Kept playing the third string QB.
I just can’t get on the JT bandwagon. He played good in 2014, by far his best year. He wasn’t asked to do too much, but was solid. Although, I don’t think we win the Natty that year without Cardale. The offense opened up when Cardale throw downfield and defenses had to cover the entire field. JT play went downhill in 2015, 2016, played a little better in 2017. The team would have been much better with a young Burrow or Haskins in 2016 and 2017. The author said “but if you had to win a game JT is outside that realm”. Seems like every game you want to win, so I guess JTs outside the realm for every game. Some give JT enormous credit for leadership. JT had some distractions in his career. From a fans perspective this is hard to judge. I see Burrow transforming an NFL franchise with his leadership I think perhaps there may have even been better leaders on the team.
The running backs are solid but if the offensive front can’t move the defense you won’t have a consistent running game. Even with all the future NFL talent on the team last year our running game was inconsistent, especially in the red zone. I feel the O line will be weaker then last year and so will the running game.
Donovan is athletic. I’ll take that over length any time. I agree his best position is guard, but he may also be one of the best 2 tackles on the team. At that point you have to look at the other pieces and see what works best overall. Do you keep him at guard and see if Fryar develops or do you kick him to tackle and Vimahi plays guard?
No doubt they will try to run. OSU couldn’t stop the run against TTUN, and are featuring a safety driven, spread stopping defense. ND strength is a good OL and a running QB. Occasionally slip your all American TE out for a pass. They will run like Navy. What’s the alternative, ask your inexperience receiver to beat Burke, while your inexperience QB avoids JT and Jack?
Last year we lost the line of scrimmage in the two losses, pushed off the ball, when we knew it was coming. A safety driven defense does not fix this. JT and Jack will be much improved that will help, but DT will need to see much improvement. If the veterans don’t improve, Tyleke, Hamilton, and Hall will be relied on. The ground and pound games will be decided by a Defensive line driven defense.
