I think the article grossly understates by omission what Welsh is facing.  It omits the “detail” that his opponent Carter Starocci is a 9th seed only because of his injury defaults at the recent Big Ten tournament. Starocci is a three time National Champion who is wrestling to add himself to the list of four time national champions… a list that has five wrestlers on it from all time (although Penn State’s Aaron Brooks may add himself to that list earlier tonight to become the sixth).

I think one can safely assume that situations that don’t appear to make sense on the surface using only publicly available information (or using only athletic or competitive related information), that there exists more to the story that may never be publicly released… and that is OK.

There may well be external factors like a GF, a graduate school program, etc.  We like to tout the program’s “Real Life Wednesdays”… it may be that “real life” may actually lead some young men to other places.  That does not necessarily reflect poorly on the football program.
