Maybe NIL issues?
I agree that having a top 5 payroll does not guarantee a WS title but most years, you have a chance to win it given the talent on the team. I read somewhere that 23 of the past 25 WS champs have had a top 10 payroll.
Until the MLB decides to have a salary cap, you need to have an owner that has deep pockets and willing to spend, no matter what it takes
Maybe not top 10, but you need to shoot for top 15 in order to truly be a world series contender on a yearly basis
Here is an interesting stat: From 1998 until 2002 opening day, the Indians payroll was 6th, 4th, 8th, 5th and 9th. From that point forward, they were in the bottom. Everyone always talks about small markets, but it does show they were able to be near the top when they chose to be
What is his contract situation like?
Another hopefully positive thing about tonight is that the bright lights of playing in NY should be gone and they can focus on just playing the game. That said, I am overly concerned with J. Naylor. You are right, I was thinking more of Bo or Austin, depends on who is starting
The most realistic outcome is to get a split here in NY. I don't know why, but I feel that we take tonight's game. Cole, who is going in game 2 has always caused us issues. We need J. Naylor to step up and be the RBI producer he was in the regular season. It would be nice if the bottom of the lineup gave us something. As far as pitching goes and I know that is not conventional, but I would walk Judge and Soto as much as possible
Care: Lack on O-line recruiting, especially quality depth
