A qb needs three things to carve up a defense, a clean pocket where they can stand tall and scan the field as the routes play out, they aren't worrying about pressure, sliding back, right or left to avoid pressure. Clean sight lines to see and throw the ball and then the ability to step into the throw. Against Oregon Gabriel was able to do all three most of the game. WR's that can run double move routes don't happen without time. QB's can't throw accurate deep balls when they can see the field and step up and throw the ball deep with accuracy.

If the front four isn't getting it done you have to bring a fifth or sixth guy to change the pattern. Speed up the decision making process of the qb and the lineman. The lineman were not getting arms up the air, not blocking sight lines, knocking down balls at the line.

This is where playing a one back set becomes an issue. If you have a fullback in the game they can help pick up some of the penetration, it gives you a lead blocker hitting the designed hole first. They did use Gurd as a fullback for a few short yardage plays and actually ran an old Woody Hayes Robust T formation with Henderson and Judkins flanking Gurd.

They have no center screen game to make the d tackles think about that possibility, they run plenty of wide WR screens or flares to RB's but no traditional center screens. They did try to run a shovel pass screen to Inniss but the center of the Oregon line blew up the play and Howard had to keep the ball and run a qb sweep.

If the center of the line keeps getting blown up in short yardage, use a play action naked boot out the backside of the formation, drag a TE in the vacated space for a run pass option. Howard is a capable runner.

When Thomas was traded to the Tribe he was brutal at the plate, then something happened and he became a guy who was hitting the ball the way they expected him.

One issue is that they can't get over is having more than just one very good starter on the staff. You can have the best pitcher in the league but if the other four starters are below average you get bounced out of the playoffs. They promote Bibee as the top starter, his inexperience in high pressure situation shows, Cantillo was a nervous wreck out there, Cobb and Boyd aren't going to dominate anyone.

That is one of the issues with being payroll limited, you may have one front line starter but your other starters will be middle of the road guys or guys on contracts before free agency.

Most of the other high profile clubs have very large local tv contracts, that is how they finance the payrolls.

They have to get hitting out of more that just Kwan and Rocchio. They have had more than enough chances at scoring, creating a big inning with plenty of base runners but they aren't getting the game changing hits. The severe lack of power is an issue, guys aren't driving the balls into gaps let alone hit  home runs. Jose had a solo shot in the ninth but nobody was on,

They fall behind early in the games and it is catch up mode all night adding to the pressure. They get the bases loaded with two outs, yet it brings the teams worst hitter to the plate and since he is the only catcher available they can't hit for him. They used the emergency catcher to hit for the starting catcher earlier in the game.

Young team in a hostile environment isn't the best position to be in, they need to get home, relax and win the next three, can't see them going back to NYC and winning two in a row,

When the Browns were reborn the Indians took a big hit in season tickets, single game tickets, corporate sponsorships. The Indians had a small window and almost pulled it winning a few titles.

Some of the players aged out and some decided to leave town via free agency.

My biggest concern all season has been the two minute offense and it failed at the end of the first half and at the end of the second half on Saturday. The team has the ability to sustain long extended drives leading to scores yet for some reason in the last two minutes of the first half ( prior to Saturday , since the games have been blowouts ) they can't execute a two minute offense and get points on the board. This should be a big red flag in a close game.

It is easy to build up stats by check downs and WR screens. Howard has shown the ability to through a 20 yard out but not the ability to take the top off the defense deep down the middle consistently. If the WR's are going to run a comeback route you need to go a few more yards past the first down marker before putting on the brakes an back for the ball, lost a few first downs this way.

Bullcrap weak kneed move by Steve Shaw and his minions. Why is this just a five yard penalty. It is an intentional, unfair act yet it has the same weight as an illegal shift or offsides. The penalty should be 15 yards from either the end of the play or the previous spot. It should also be an automatic first down for the offense.

This should apply for the entire game not just the last two minutes, the only thing I agree with is resetting the clock if the foul occurs in the last two minutes of the half. This will lead to an automatic video review to confirm the amount of time on the clock at  the previous snap.

Comment 15 Oct 2024

also defined in the rule book as an unsportsmanlike act

4 No substitute(s) may enter the field of play or end zones for purposes
other than replacing a player(s) or to fill a player vacancy(ies) This
includes demonstrations after any play (AR 9-2-1-I

There were already 11 players on the field when the substitute entered the field, he was not replacing a player nor filling a vacancy, the substitute was an added player, no vacancy to replace.

if you watch the play a there were 12 on the field, a defensive lineman exits the field and is immediately replaced by another player putting 12 on the field at the snap. Two players not one would have had to leave the filed to make it a legal substitution.

Comment 15 Oct 2024

There are already rules on the books for unfair plays and tactics. Ultimately this rests on the on field crew for not properly applying the rules. You may want to assign some blame to the Steve Shaw's and Conference officiating heads for not having this as a point of emphasis to the on field officials. The on field officials have plenty of training mostly quizzes and video review of plays.

The only issue that would require a rule change would be adding time back on the clock, to the best of my knowledge there is no circumstance where time is added back to the clock on a live ball foul. There are provisions for un timed downs if a live ball foul occurs at the end of a half.

an unfair act as described in the rulebook

c An obviously unfair act not specifically covered by the rules occurs during
the game This includes substitutes, coaches or any other persons subject to
the rules, other than a player or official, interfering in any way with the ball
or a player while the ball is in play (AR 4-2-1-II, 9-2-3-I and 9-2-3-IV)
PENALTY— Unsportsmanlike conduct. The referee may take any action
they consider equitable, which includes directing that the
down be repeated, including assessing a 15-yard penalty,
awarding a score, or suspending or forfeiting the game [S27].

I will argue that playing 11 against 12 by design would fit the definition an obvious unfair act.

What happened to the run game after the first quarter, even before Simmons went out in the second quarter Oregon was stuffing the OSU run after Henderson's two long runs to end the first quarter.

Only watching the tv broadcast it seemed as Zen has not getting beat.

Comment 14 Oct 2024

I'll make this argument, it wasn't an illegal substitution penalty it was an unfair tactic penalty by having 12 on the field at the snap and the 12th player made no effort to leave the field prior to the snap. Oregon had 12 on the field, a defensive lineman ran off the field then another player immediately runs onto the field to take their place. Is playing 11 on 12 an unfair act?

how the rule book covers unfair acts

c An obviously unfair act not specifically covered by the rules occurs during
the game This includes substitutes, coaches or any other persons subject to
the rules, other than a player or official, interfering in any way with the ball
or a player while the ball is in play (AR 4-2-1-II, 9-2-3-I and 9-2-3-IV

Unfair tactics, is playing 11 vs 12 an unfair tactic

b No simulated replacements or substitutions may be used to confuse
opponents No tactic associated with substitutes or the substitution process
may be used to confuse opponents (Rule 3-5-2-e) (AR 9-2-2-I-VI) This
includes any hideout tactic with or without a substitution

This would have been a 15 yard penalty and not a five yard foul.

Comment 14 Oct 2024

I would venture to guess that 99% of the people in the stadium did nit know that the clock would begin on the ready and not at the snap. The referee who made the penalty call should have informed the stadium that the clock would tart on his signal and not at the snap. The referee also waited a few seconds before having the clock started after he went into his position.

This is a direct quote from the Rules Interpretation section of the 2024 College Football Rulebook Page FI-55

V Before the ball is thrown, wide receiver A88 moves four yards downfield
directly toward and in front of the defender, B1 At this spot, B1 pushes
A88, who then uses his hands to contact B1 RULING: Team A foul,
offensive pass interference, if the legal forward pass is beyond the neutral
zone Penalty—15 yards from the previous spot

This is pretty close to what actually happened on the play, I do think the CB did a good job selling the contact

Oregon had just taken a 15-14 lead when Simmons went down, this was about halfway through the second quarter. Zen held his own at the tackle spot, it was the two guys that were playing left guard that were a bigger issue. I will be interested to see the offensive line film break down.

OSU had 99 rushing yards after the first quarter and just 42 over the last three quarters. The second quarter was 11 rushes for just 23 yards  We also used more two tight end sets than normal yet they still couldn't establish a run game after the first quarter. We can blame the defense for giving up too many yards and points but the run game has to do its part as well. Oregon played without one of their best defensive lineman.

23 carries for 42 yards the last three quarters of a competitive game is not a winning formula.

Howard 9 carries for 13 yards *( 12 on the last play). Judkins 11 carries 23 yards. Henderson had the 50+ yard run in the first quarter yet no more 10 yard runs until the last play of the game. We even used a new wrinkle with Egbuka get hand offs from the rb position. This may be an instance of having no lead blockers as a full back may have been an issue.

Comment 13 Oct 2024

Left out of the article, the total inability to run the ball in the second half of the game, 21 rushes for 122 yards in the first and just 12 rushes for 19 yards in the second half with 12 yards on the last play.

Judkins was totally ineffective with a long run of 6 yards. 11 carries for 23 yards. Did the Oregon defensive line make some adjustment to make OSU one dimensional? Zen held his own replacing Simmons, the guards were totally ineffective especially the two at right guard.

OSU has had issues running two minute offense all season, end of the first half, two underneath passes leaves third and one, can't convert via a stuffed run and have to punt it away. Even against inferior teams this team has not been productive in the end of half offense.

At the end of the first half the two starting running backs and the two tight ends had more receiving yards than Egbuka and Smith yet both of them ended up with 193 yards combined.  Egbuka and Smith combined for seven catches but just 35 yards at the half, the offense ws not trying to stretch the field.

Let me add one more thing, if they take seats out, those nice seats you had in row 10 at 20 yard line may now be in row 40 in the corner of the end zone or in the upper deck, be careful for what you wish for. Somebody will be displaced and it very well may be you unless you are prepared to pay the price.

I have seen plenty of people who are too large even for a regular chairback seat these days.

You certainly won't be getting a closer seat for the same money.

Trickle down incompetence. The Watson trade / contract is a like throwing a lead weight out to a guy dawg paddling in Lake Erie. You not only over paid for what you got,you have issues for years. In addition to getting Watson, by giving up three first rounders you don't have two if not three starters in the current line up, all on rookie contracts.

Berry and the rest of the organization knew last year offensive tackle was an issue, Wills isn't the answer, Jones is still a project, Hudson isn't the answer and no one knew what the status of Conklin would be. Instead they did not get a high profile tackle in free agency, nor did they draft a tackle anywhere in the draft, instead they drafted a guard / center.

They lose one of the best offensive line coaches in the game and his replacement is not getting it done either.

They might as well not even had training camp / exhibition games, for some reason Stefanski thought getting actual or even preseason game reps was not important. Let's just sit the guys out and hope on week one some light comes on, well some one forgot to install the light bulb. This team is in no better shape even if Chubb was in the lineup week one. He doesn't take sacks. throw inaccurate passes, drop catchable balls, No one really knows what effect Dorsey has on the offense, Stefanski has always been a control freak and I don't see him letting go of play calling.
